No automatic X on boot please

#1 Post by Wed »

Ending up in X upon boot just don't rub me the right way. Is this problem simply solved by removing the gdm package?

Yes, by removing whatever display manager you have, you won't have X started upon boot.

Thanks a lot, worked like a charm.

However, the command 'startx', just assumes I want to start KDE, which I don't.

The command 'startkde', of course starts KDE. But there don't seem to exist any command to start Gnome with. 'startgnome' is not recognised.

Any suggestions?

I myself don't use gnome, so maybe I'm wrong, but I think the "gome-session" command is used to start gnome. Write it to your ~/.xinitrc, and see if I'm right :-)

"gnome-session" does not seem to be the correct answer. Ididn't edit my xinitrc, but logged out of KDE and tried said command. with no luck.

xinit /usr/bin/gnome-session
xinit /usr/bin/startkde
xinit /usr/bin/wmaker
xinit /usr/bin/startfluxbox
xinit /usr/bin/icewm-session
startxfce4
