network bandwidth usage monitoring application

Postby aspnair » 2010-06-07 09:54

I just wanted to use a network bandwidth usage monitoring application.

Scenario: I am using an EV-DO based USB broadband modem with a limited GB plan. For additional data usage they charge per MB. Currently I use either wvdial (mostly) or pon to start the connection. So if there is any network monitoring application which could log time used and data used for the session, it would be great. Actually debian has too many different network monitoring applications, But I am not sure which one suits well for this purpose.

I have the same issue than you, but i haven't found nothing good like DU meter for Windows. What were the applications that you found?

I have seen conky.rc files that use vnstat to monitor total usage. There's also a screenlets widget that can do monthly totals as long as it's running.

Thanks stevepusser
I installed conky and vnstat. Both of them seem to have a lot of logging capability. I am exploring them how to use in this case. BTW, Do you have any easy configuraiton parameters to suit this particular need?

For conky
Down: $color${downspeed eth0} k/s ${alignr}Up: ${upspeed eth0} k/s
${downspeedgraph eth0 25,140 000000 ff0000} ${alignr}${upspeedgraph eth0
25,140 000000 00ff00}$color
Total: ${totaldown eth0} ${alignr}Total: ${totalup eth0}
Inbound: ${tcp_portmon 1 32767 count} Outbound: ${tcp_portmon 32768
61000 count}${alignr}Total: ${tcp_portmon 1 65535 count}

Make sure you use the correct network connection for ethx.

I heard about conky a lot before, but never tried it. Anyway, I installed it and configured it with the changes recommended by craigevil. It looks really great, especially how it sits transparently on the desktop. Also tried vnstat, feels like this one is going to suit my purpose better because it shows a nice log which persists across reboots.
