What qualities should a GRUB-PC background image have?
What qualities should a GRUB-PC background image have?
Hi, just a quick question. After much searching and trying of more complicated methods for changing the GRUB-PC background image, i found method that seems to work. The simplest one!
I installed grub2-splashimages, which created a new folder in /usr/share/images, called grub. From there it appears to be as simple as adding the image of your choice, then adding "GRUB_BACKGROUND=/usr/share/images/grub/your_image" to "/etc/default/grub" file, the running "update-grub", of course.
Sweet. Only problem is it doesnt work for the image i really want.
So my question: What qualities should an image have if it is to be successfully used as a GRUB-PC (GRUB 2?) background?
I have read that you do not need to resize the image anymore, indeed i tried resizing it to match the size a default image form the "/usr/share/images/grub" folder , and saving it with the extension .tga in Gimp and it did not work.
The image i want to use is quite large, it is also black and white/grey-scale and in the .png format.
So, where am i going wrong?
Cheers Debian forums.

Re: What qualities should a GRUB-PC background image have?
The README (/usr/share/doc/grub2-splashimages/README) says:
2. How to make one?
Basic instructions:
* tga file format
* 640x480 px
Re: What qualities should a GRUB-PC background image have?
Grub manual says..
`GRUB_BACKGROUND'
Set a background image for use with the `gfxterm' graphical
terminal. The value of this option must be a file readable by
GRUB at boot time, and it must end with `.png', `.tga', `.jpg', or
`.jpeg'. The image will be scaled if necessary to fit the screen.

Re: What qualities should a GRUB-PC background image have?
EDIT: This is wrong- /etc/default/grub does work- I just tried it. I thought I'd tried that method and it didn't work, but obviously I was mistaken.
/etc/default/grub won't work.
You need to edit /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme.

Re: What qualities should a GRUB-PC background image have?
I had to change GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 to GRUB_GFXMODE=640x400 in /etc/default/grub for it to work. Has something to do with aspect ratio of the framebuffer.FreewheelinFrank wrote: Didn't work for me chum.

My apologies- I tried it again and it does work.4D696B65 wrote:Bull plop, works fine for me.FreewheelinFrank wrote:/etc/default/grub won't work.

I'd tried something before I found the method I posted that didn't work, but either it wasn't this, or I hadn't applied it correctly.
I'll edit my post.

If it's not the recommended method, you may want to post the approved method on that thread.

Re: What qualities should a GRUB-PC background image have?
Turns out (you probabaly know) the image doesnt even have to be placed in any particular directory, have been linking to pictures in my Pictures folder in my home directory. Still cant get the image i want to work with GRUB though, tried changing to GRUB_GFXMODE=640x400, no joy.
Cant work out what the problem is, some images, be they png or jpg, work fine, others dont. Sizes vary. Even tried converting my image of choice to various formats in GIMP.
Unfortunately i cant get any of my black and white pictures to work with GRUB, which is a shame, as the coloured ones dont look so good with the text overlay.
Oh well, at least we know the method works, which is sweet as it such an easy method. The 05_debian_theme is a really messy file and i couldnt find any of the lines referred to in other peoples guides.
Any one know of any parameters that are REQUIRED by GRUB?

Re: What qualities should a GRUB-PC background image have?
It does matter where the image is placed. It can't be on a file system that isn't mounted yet.demion wrote:Turns out (you probabaly know) the image doesnt even have to be placed in any particular directory, have been linking to pictures in my Pictures folder in my home directory

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 ... %20ThemingThe image is of the proper size & format (tga, png, 8-bit jpg).
The image was saved in the RGB mode, and is not indexed.
Worth checking that images are RGB mode, not indexed, and 8-bit if jpg.
Re: What qualities should a GRUB-PC background image have?
This was it. Changed to RGB and it works fine now.
Thanks so much.
There are two or three proposed methods floating around, some more fiddly than others, but it turned out be so straightforward.

4D696B65 if images in your home directory arnt working for you, your missing out.
GRUB_BACKGROUND=/home/malfoy/Pictures/brain.jpg in my /etc/default/grub file, and displaying fine.
Perhaps when you update-grub it saves a copy where it can access it.

Re: What qualities should a GRUB-PC background image have?
It does work for me, I was trying to give you the heads up on mounted partitions at grub boot time. Thanks anyway.demion wrote:4D696B65 if images in your home directory arnt working for you, your missing out.

Glad you got it worked out. I am sure this thread will come in handy to people in the future.
Re: What qualities should a GRUB-PC background image have?
I see.
So, a copy is made in my boot partition?
