can't login as root

having problems logging in as root i'm by now pretty desperate what to do! debian woody 3.02r i can login as user but not as root! The strange thing is that i know the passwd. This occurred when i was trying to install a samba-pdc en probably mixed up some accounts. I don't know! plz help me

Start in single user mode.
at the % prompt:
% passwd
After you enter your new root password reboot normally.

If you are using KDE, find the file, "/etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc". Then find the line that reads, "AllowRootLogin=False". You know what to do next.

afaik is logging as / is prohibited on every DM.(plz correct me if i'm wrong)
2 amend jimbo-62 - if ur using Gnome: -> /etc/gdm/gdm.conf ->
set allowRoot=0 to 1

or just start with: su "-c <program>"
