[solved] Duplicate entries in sources.list???

Postby julian516 » 2012-02-23 21:09

I am running wheezy 64-bit Xfce and it has run well, thanks to the people who are working on it!

Recently if I do apt-get update I see this result at the end of the update list:

W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy/main amd64 Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_wheezy_main_binary-amd64_Packages)
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

Repeating apt-get update does not resolve the problem.

My experience and other threads in this forum suggest that the problem is a messy sources.list with duplicate entries. Here is mine:

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux testing _Wheezy_ - Official Snapshot amd64 NETIN$
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux testing _Wheezy_ - Official Snapshot amd64 NETIN$

# deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main
# deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main

deb http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy contrib non-free main
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main
# deb-src http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main

I think I see just three active repositories, none of them duplicates? Do you agree?

The apt-get output references /var/lib/apt/lists, something I do not understand. It seems to be dynamic, building file lists as apt-get update is run. Here is what I have:

file:///var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_wheezy_contrib_binary-amd64_Packages
file:///var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_wheezy_contrib_binary-amd64_Packages.IndexDiff
file:///var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_wheezy_contrib_i18n_Translation-en
file:///var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_wheezy_InRelease
file:///var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_wheezy_main_binary-amd64_Packages
file:///var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_wheezy_main_binary-amd64_Packages.IndexDiff
file:///var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_wheezy_main_i18n_Index
file:///var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_wheezy_main_i18n_Translation-en
file:///var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_wheezy_non-free_binary-amd64_Packages
file:///var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_wheezy_non-free_binary-amd64_Packages.IndexDiff
file:///var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_wheezy_non-free_i18n_Translation-en
file:///var/lib/apt/lists/lock
file:///var/lib/apt/lists/security.debian.org_dists_wheezy_updates_InRelease
file:///var/lib/apt/lists/security.debian.org_dists_wheezy_updates_main_binary-amd64_Packages

Question: Can better eyes than mine spot a duplication?

Is the duplication within sources.list or between sources .list and /var/lib/apt/lists?

And what the heck does the /var ... /list do?

I surely do appreciate your help!

Thank you dilbert. So are you saying that deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy contrib non-free main and deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main constitute a duplication? Seems odd. I thought that "wheezy contrib non-free main" and "wheezy main" pointed to different repositories. Sorry to be dense.

Got some relevent Ring in the FM???? Happy to do it if I can find it!

It's not odd, they are both the same url, and in both lines you are telling it to look in main
Each word after the wheezy part is a directory/repository on the mirror, for example main is one, then contrib, then non-free etc,

Not the best of descriptions but I'm sure you know what i mean.

Yes. You have 'main' twice. The first line covers all three sections of the wheezy repo - main, contrib & non-free

My thanks to both of you and we'll mark this one solved. The fix was simple once I understood what I was looking at. The irony here is that I have spent time with Aoki's terrific manual -- and I still missed this!

Debian is very good for me - it keeps me humble. A little humble is not a bad thing.
