Welcome SpamHunters!

#1 Post by ana »

Hi,

Since today, some users have the role "SpamHunter", this allow them to move the spam messages to a hidden board.
The list of special users is, in no special order:

telemachus
craigevil
gnudude
Absent Minded
Jackiebrown
saulgoode
lolanoob

They are not moderators, they are just helping out to remove the spam. And the only admin privilege they have is being able to move posts between forums.
Next step is improving the forum spam filters, but we always will have some spam that pass the filters.

That's a good development, now, if someone could program a "report Spam" button on this forum...

It's the red exclamation mark at the bottom right of each post in the regular board sections.

Sorry, don't know what you mean. There might be a button somewhere on the forums, but what I'm saying is a button in the thread (next to "quote" button for example)

It's actually more effective to use the good old Spamreporting thread. Because we can subscribe to it and get an e-mail when someone post a report and the thread 'lights up' when there are new posts.

To see the ordinary reported posts we have to go looking for them all the time.

That's what it is. It can't be seen in this section "News & Announcements" but have a look at a post in one of the regular sections and it's bottom right over every single post.

But anyway Lavene's post suggests that the zillion spams I reported using the report button were mostly wasted effort :P so no need to put your specs on and go looking for it

No really, I do prefer the report thingie :)

Btw, spamhunters can not remove posts... so it is a small flaw with this system of reporting in a thread and removing after.

Glad you mentioned that. I've been using the invisible-to-AdrianTM button and wondering why the thread is left up for people who don't get it! :D

Oh, OK, so it's not in this section only.

But... can't that be programmed to send e-mail too? It looks more convenient that going on the other section of the forum to report a thread. (plus that you need to copy&paste -- which I'm too lazy to do -- remember spammers do most of the spam automatically, we do the monkey work by copying and pasting manually threads, all this should ideally be done in one-click)

FWIW, I usually don't even open spam threads because I know from the title what they are...

Maybe we should coordinate our efforts to alternate between them.

Ok my brain has two conflicting ideas circulating...crash imminent.

For clarification: use the button or use the thread?

Please don't answer 'use the thingie' :D

edit: p.s. and what should Adrian do?

Use the button. SpamHunters can see and close the reports. The thread is good for only 1-2 person, but when it is more people, the reporting system is better.

And is it not going to be annoying if, like 10 people, press the button at the same time?

I never repeated posts, I always checked whether the reported post was already listed by somebody else.

So should the "Spam Reporting" thread be locked and unstickied?

That forum section could use a little cleanup too...too many spam related threads

The admins can delete the thread altogether. Why on earth do they keep dead threads in the administrative parts of the forum?

So, gnudude and Jackiebrown you can remove my posts... :P
