what's IRC (before anyone says it, I'm not being sarcastic. I AM that clueless sometimes)
for as long as the world remains. for as long as time remains. so, too, will I remain. To serve. To help. And to make my contribution. Also, never forget our family at debianuserforums.org If we can't solve your problem, they probably can.

from what i know: install an IRC-client, for example xchat, and add the info given by Mez above. voila.
some usefull infos, it`s merely a short intro, are to be found in oswaldkelsos beginners guide. near to the bottom.
(i couldn`t squeeze out one bit of info from IRC so far, but that might be me)

I set up my irc client back when mez first posted. (google was my friend because I didn't know either.) for the first couple of weeks there was no traffic or information so I stopped logging in. I'll go back now and see what's there.

A bit off-topic... I sometimes like to setup phpfreechat, for people to chat in an IRC-like environment through their browser, rather than asking people not familiar with IRC, to install and configure an IRC client.

That is a good idea. A irc webchat link on the main forum page. For those that are too impatient to wait for help on the forum.

Debian IRC Chat Wiki here.
IRC Chat Wikipedia page here.
Basically chat-rooms for nerds (and others) using a specific lightweight chat program, i.e. xchat (actual repository packagename).
Sample pic of IRC in action here.
