why not?
afaics, these suffixes have lost all their meaning.
a commercial company can have an .org suffix
any voluntary non-profit hacker can hae a .com suffix.
a server that's not in italy can have an .it suffix
etc. etc.

Do you think anyone who been using the internet for the past ~17 years even knew they had a purpose/meaning behind them at one time? "Modern" browsers don't even need you to specify http or https (if they think there's more than one) let alone a suffix is you don't want.

You know nothing good ever stays that way... if corporation can generate profits from it.

The answer is because if it had .org extension, then the forums would occupy a subdomain of debian.org rather than debian.net. A users' forum cannot be an official part of debian.org, which is for the Debian Project itself.
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

Thanks, that is a good answer,....
There is a partial list of the debian.net domains here:
https://wiki.debian.org/DebianNetDomains
and even more:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=-i ... debian.net

Then I stumbled on to this:

Thanks for your reply with the debian.net domains and specially the ianmurdock.debian.net link which I've just been reading with great interest.
