How do you about multilingual forums?

Have something to say about forums.debian.net itself?

How do you about multilingual forums?

Our forums are to small to make them multi-langual.
Many people know a little english so if someone asks a question in english more people can try to answer this question.

Thank you for your feedback!

I think that the multigual forum like http://forums.gentoo.org/ is the best idea. Debian is a multilingual project, not a only-in-English project... A lot of people don't understand English. And support more languages than English is in the way of the Debian project philosophy.

Best regards.

As MarkvD said there are not yet enough users here for such a thing. Would you like a $YOURLANG subboard here where noone answers your questions because noone speaks that language?

Btw. for german there is the gr8 www.debianforum.de

Well, that's probably the classic hen and egg problem... ;) I think that there will be enough international users to justify multilinguality.

For the moment I think an only-english forum is good enough.
Besides, I allready have a forum in $MYLANG

If I can identify the language in which a question is being asked, I try to make the requestor aware of the appropriate mail list in http://lists.debian.org/users.html. The majority of these "localized" lists seem to be lower-volume than the English Debian-User list.

"Debian is a multilingual project, not a only-in-English project... A lot of people don't understand English."

I agree with that but I guess it's up to the owners of this forum to decide.

I still agree with what Mark said above, with the current amount of people, it's really I think only *hurting* people's experience by encouraging them to ask questions in a much less understood language, than by asking people to write questions in English, which everyone here can answer, regardless of the quality of English.

I'm willing to revisit this though when a group of let's say 5-10 people request a specific language's forum -- until that moment, I don't think it's useful to discuss this on an abstract level, it's much easier to decide when there's an actual request at hand.

Jeroen, please can take into consideration that (in case we have forums in other languages) someone could post a solution in another language and someone else, who is fluent in English and in that other language, could check that solution and translate it into English whenever the same issue is posted in English and there is no answer... or in other words: this forum could benefit from people willing to translate the solutions into English.
