I'm a new forum admin, say hi!

Have something to say about forums.debian.net itself?

I'm a new forum admin, say hi!

Postby paulproteus » 2010-08-03 17:45

Hello!

I'm Asheesh, and I want to introduce myself. I'm a Debian developer who wants to help out the forums. (My nick is paulproteus, and I'm paulproteus at debian.org.)

I have to make two admissions, before this goes any further: I don't have a lot of time to move the forums forward, and so far, I seem to use email lists a whole lot more than I use forums.

I have a lot to learn about the forum community, both this Debian one in particular and forums in general. And I often talk weird, as you can see from this paragraph.

But here's what I have to offer:

  • A little bit of time.
  • A lot of love for the community you guys have here! :D
  • Access to the server where the forums are hosted.

This last one is pretty neat. It means I can upgrade the forum software, and replace the silly sign-up question. I think it makes sense to replace it with reCAPTCHA. (I think a technical measure to combat automated spam is a good idea.)

So I want to say hello and ask what you guys are thinking lately.

I'm new here, and I want to help. Like basically everyone, I'm doing a lot of things, and I won't be able to spend more than a few hours a week on the forum. :|

But!

I want to help! So let's see what we can do together.

What are the most important things I can do to make this place better? Okay, so I plan to upgrade the forum and start using reCAPTCHA <http://recaptcha.net/> for anti-spam. So what else?

Welcome, Asheesh. As said above, anti-spam is probably the biggest priority.

Also, it's always great to have a DD's opinions.

Hello Asheesh,
Welcome to the forum. I use reCAPTCHA on my own tiny little forum (it was amazingly getting overloaded with spam for being basicly an unknown) and it seems to work well. I am guessing that is one of the reason it was chosen.

Although I haven't read an official announcement of your being here. I would like to welcome you aboard. I have seen you a few times this past month in the team area for the forums IRC channel. As such I believe you are exactly as you have said and that Mez just hasn't gotten around to mentioning it to the rest of us yet. I know a while back he did announce that there would be a few new admins so I have been expecting you "so to speak".

Glad to see you have your stripes (or should I say color) finely. Hope to see you around.

Rules we don't need any stinking rules. :P You did mean slide rules right?

Welcome to the Debian Forums. Glad to have you.

But . . . please, be a 'user-friendly' Forum Admin.

user friendly? wtf is that?

Actually, I like the spam... since we are used to ignoring the rules anyways  we love to attack spammers that make the mistake of creating a login here, just to advertise their wares... lots of folks here wear forum combat boots... the KICK is GOOD!
