remove posts instead of locking threads?

#1 Post by MALsPa »

Is it not possible for the mods here to remove offensive posts instead of locking an entire thread?

do they not do both?

leave the less offensive
and close a thread when it is seemingly going in a certain direction?

and is this not what is done by mods in most visible sites?

i generally find forums are reluctant to censor. happpens on rare occassions.

So malspa, i take it you have no issue with losing your right to freedom of speech? what is your country of birth and the country which currently enjoys your residence? are you a citizen thereof?

Is this a joke? I'm not worried about losing my right to freedom of speech. Why do you care about where I was born or where I live or whether or not I'm a citizen?

That's what I'm asking, can the offensive posts be simply deleted? I'm sure they can but seems to me that what happens most of the time is that the entire thread gets locked. I guess it's a judgment call on whether or not the thread is going in a certain direction.

you didn't catch my reference to how you want the mods to censor. You state

i then asked (maybe not in obvious way); what the free speech terms are where you live (and asked the same in case where you live is not where you were born).

OK, I don't think the free speech terms where I live have anything to do with what happens at these forums. Freedom of speech at any Linux forum is limited to what the forum administrators decide, obviously.

But if you're just curious about where I live: Albuquerque, New Mexico. USA. I'm a citizen of the United States.

Anyway, found the answer to my question in the forum guidelines:
The following might get your post EDITED:
- Profanities
- Links to inappropriate websites

The following might get your post/ thread LOCKED
- Flaming/ personal attacks
- Obvious trolling
- Thread has wandered way off topic
- Cross posting

The following might get your post REMOVED
- Advertising/ Spamming
- Obviously racist/ sexist/ hateful content
- Obviously political/ religious content
- Obvious pornographic content

Well, according to the guidelines, all posts mentioning the almighty ceiling cat, creationists, and climate change should have been removed- including a mod post. But then you wouldn't have had a thread left anyway, so it's a moot point. If the thread were locked as wandering way off topic, which it had, that may have been a better explanation. At any rate, I apologize if the lolcat scripture upset anyone or caused undue stress. I'm not mod-bashing, by the way, I'm aware it's a thankless gig- damned if you do, damned if you don't. Someday we will live in a utopia where we can exchange our interpretations of lolcat scripture without fear of persecution.

"The Almighty Ceiling Cat." That's some goofy stuff! Just looked it up.

OK, this thread is doomed.

LOL, you guys crack me up some times. Anyway, I am guessing that this is over a thread I recently locked and a post I edited. Fortunately or not I can not say much about what another mod posts. I am restricted so if there is a problem with a mod please feel free to send an e-mail to our administrative team. ie... I can't do anything about it.

Now, as for the thread and post.. many members here get very upset when posts come up missing. Thinking that the report I answered was just in response to the one post I just removed the offensive content. However, reading further down the thread, it seemed that that is what the whole thread turned into. So, I just locked it instead of removing the entire thread. I felt it best not censor as much as possible.

Fair enough, AM. Yeah, after I looked at the forum guidelines, I kinda figured things out. And, I can understand that it's best not to censor when possible. I guess you have to walk a fine line in deciding whether a thread is worth keeping open without certain posts or whether the thread should just be locked.

Telemachus and I have discussed the situation and it is felt that just splitting out the offending posts is the better rout to go with this. Both of us are in agreement so that is what is going to be done. I hope this will be understandable and under the circumstances everyone will find this a reasonable solution even though it is not really customary.

Well: i am one of those who get "upset" when posts get removed or threads get moved or whatever.
To give an explanation:
This morning it took me a while to figure out what was going on (huh? split? what? where? why?).
If threads get closed one at least knows what is going on (it "upsets " me too, but at least i understand whats going on).

Short: it confuses me, and it confuses me a lot.

That depends (a wee bit) on people who do care about it (-> freedom) at all.

The almighty cat dosna seem to be that almighty, else she could handle a bit of ... mhhh.... humor?
But that is a different story and off-topic...

side note about one (of many other ) forums:
Have a look at my twin (called jalu), what the mighty BähEsDeh mod does to him:
http://forums.freebsd.org/forumdisplay. ... becba3&f=5
Well: i can't link to it cause it is removed. After a fellow told me that he'd need more info if he would want to answer at all, generous as he is, i told him that it ain't necessary to answer at all and that i want my account to be deleted (in case possible, i said: "it would be nice", which i for one think is friendly).
Obviously they got a very free licensed way to deal with any form of criticism or "problems" (-> simply remove).
About that i don't get "upset" cause i don't care for them at all. I am done with the lsd-folks.Replaced "Free"-bsd with Mepis and am done with a lot of other problems too (burning CDs, mounting ext3, using-sh-style instead of bashisms and what not)

Be happy, and proud?, this forum is the way it is.
