AbsentMinded and his banhammer powers

#1 Post by LostYourMindHaveYou »

This is his "wise" decision:

Code: Select all

You have been banned from this board until 2011-01-28 05:48.

Please contact the Board Administrator for more information.

Reason given for ban: Posting porn to the forum to test the staff is a very unwise thing to do. The next time it will be a perminant ban.
This guy is plain wrong on so many points:
1. This is not porn - http://oi53.tinypic.com/348g28x.jpg
2. I'm not testing any staff (or his staff powers which he obviously loves to show off). To put it in proper perspective, please read through the thread it was posted in - http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=59409
3. No one should be banned for life (or threatened) based on one post alone.
4. If you're threatening someone of a permanent ban, at least spell the word "permanent" correctly.

This guy may have all the time in the world to moderate a forum but I think he should keep his personal issues in check before swinging the banhammer. I accuse this guy of discrimination.

First off, AbsentMinded isn't a native speaker, so him flubbing spelling up isn't unexpected(unless you want to dictate he set his spellcheck to English. Second, I can see how that'd count as porn.

Well I'm not a native English speaker too and I live in a country where there are no native English speakers.

Your pic was no worse than this one...
Look closely, exposed NIPPLES!!! Look to the right of the desktop...
Your mistake was posting tux-painted boobies in that particular thread. Did he get a warning and some time off, too? Maybe no one tattled on his post. Neither one bothers me, but I may be more liberal than some. All I know is I wouldn't want the task of moderating here, or anywhere else for that matter.
To think some dog turds really started this whole thing still gives me a chuckle. Art vs. porn is indeed a subjective thing.

Oh, for heaven's sake, what did you expect when you posted that pic? Understand, it doesn't personally offend me, but such material has NO PLACE on a forum like this one. Maybe one could get away with this on a photography forum, but not this one. I don't presume to speak for the ladies here, but I certainly don't want to have this place covered with pics of naked men, so why would the ladies here have to be exposed to pics of naked women; geez, have some consideration for others!

Oh, and you were banned for a whole week! Talk about a slap on the wrist  Oh, and BTW, apparently it didn't stop you from registering under a different name & coming back to bitch. What did you expect when you chose to get in a pissing contest with a mod? Grow up.

I see a pretty lady, that's all.

I didn't get a warning. I was banned (for a week) right away with a warning of a permanent ban.

From a non-native English speaker, the word "discretion" springs to mind.

Pissing contest or not, why was I the only who got banned in that thread? That's selective, discriminatory exercise of one's mod powers.

Oh c'mon...don't be such a drama queen & take it so personally  . You posted something you know you shouldn't have & got called on it. Be a man, quit pointing the finger at others, accept your lumps & move on. It really wasn't that big a deal... :x turn that frown upside down. :) I went back & looked up some of your posts & I feel that the forum is better off with you than without you, as long as you stay away from verboten postings. Besides, in 100 years, who is gonna care?

Judging from the OP's defiant, immature behavior in this thread, Absent Minded is certainly a good judge of character. I like that in a moderator. :)

OK thanks to everyone who replied - JohnDeere630 for your (not funny this time around, ok maybe just a little) name-calling, SoulSingin' for the video link (although I would've preferred a Black Crowes song coming from you), and traveler the only one who doesn't seem to be biased at all.

I'm not trying to fool anyone and I have no idea someone's character is at stake on Teh Internets...I just want to uh...I just want to...POST! That's all folks.

Bye for now. Cheers!

If I had to pick sides, I'd go with AM for three reasons.
1- Even though the post didn't offend me personally, everyone was warned and you did it anyway to test the waters.
2- You got a light punishment, yet came back on a new account, probably using a proxy, to fight about it.
3- Although I don't always agree with all of his decisions (usually regarding image content), I have never seen him act in a spiteful manner. He's always been pretty fair and acts with what he feels is in the best interest of the forum. There's no power trip banhammer attitude there.

My advice would be to not post any more on your new account and ride out your punishment.

arbitrary decisions.
I wrote a complaint, via email to where i was asked to team@forums.debian.net
Already yesterday.
Not that i would think it would help. Just to give a hint about what i feel about the forum.
Best might be to start simply removing/banning/whatever without any further whining.

I checked the pic. ridiculous.
really. We are not living in the 50's.

All i gotta say.

Aw, come on, this is hardly porn. I'd say that's stretching the definition pretty thin and far. Basically, you'd have to equate nudity with pornography and let's be clear, those are not equivalent. I had to look twice to see that it wasn't a really tight shirt but actually body paint. I know that pictures containing at least as much nudity has been posted in various screenshoots and I bet lots of those that are more erotic in nature too. The one linked to in this thread is one example. (At least this one had tux in it. Two, actually.) Getting banned a week isn't the end of the world but I don't agree that this is porn.

I think most people here recognize the difference between nudity and porn, and I also realize that for folks from other countries, like France, for instance, would not find that pic remarkable in any way. However, I think most would agree that the theme of this forum is technical. It is really no place for nude pics, or porn, or bomb-making, nor parenting, nor cooking tips...etc., etc.

Also, what a lot of people seem not to notice is, this forum is NOT a democracy, but technically an oligarchy. The owner(s) select the governing body arbitrarily. The regular users don't have to agree with the mods, nor the power structure, nor do we have any direct say. Anyone who objects to these self-evident facts has essentially 4 choices: Leave, accept the rules, petition the owner(s) to become a moderator, or attempt to privately convince a moderator that he/she made a bad call, realizing that said moderator does NOT owe petitioner even an answer, much less agreement. What does NOT help is to open a thread to attempt to bully a moderator into changing his mind about a decision which: A. was his decision to make, with no apology or explanation needed, and B. many of us, even though we do not personally find the picture offensive, nevertheless do not feel that this forum is the correct place for such material.

You are completely right.
There is not much one can say about it.

I don't think you got an idea how sad that is in my eyes.
I hope no one will ever tell me about linux or freedom or dreams ever again
