My understanding is...

View New Posts will display the threads which have had any new posts added to them since your last visit, sorted chronologically based on the timestamp of the last post in each thread.

View Active Topics will display threads which have had new posts added to them during a user-specified time period (defaults to 7 days), sorted chronologically based on the timestamp of the last post in each thread.
Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it. -- Brian Kernighan

If I am remembering correctly, there was at one time (pre version 2 of PHPBB) an intent that View Active would be sorted by number of posts added; but I don't think it was ever successfully implemented (or perhaps it was just deemed too resource hungry).

A related question, probably not warranting a thread of its own.

If I click on 'Discussion' on the front page, I'm taken here;

http://forums.debian.net/viewforum.php?f=24

Which is sometimes quite useful to see an overview. If I click 'Help', I'm taken here;

http://forums.debian.net/viewforum.php?f=22

Which is useless. Could the latter be 'fixed' so it behaves like the former?
The Forum's search box is terrible. Use site specific search, e.g.
https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3A ... terms+here
