Could we get an update of the forum guidelines?

#1 Post by mojoman »

Reading the forum guidelines there is, at least as far as I can see, no reference to banning. There was a time when this made sense. For years, banning was, to my knowledge, both unheard of and uncalled for. Yet, now people are obviously being banned from the forum, and this for various reasons. Perhaps it is time to update the forum guidelines? To better reflect the current practice and spirit on forums.debian.net?

...and maybe a subforum listing banned users, their offence & sentence.
Sort of like the 'hanging tree' outside the village, or heads on the battlements.

I don't know if you are kidding or not, but that is not a bad idea. After all, if you commit a traffic violation, you get your name in the paper. I think maybe that if people had a better idea of what constitutes trolling or other major forum violations, it may reduce some of the guff the mods get.

I'm internally reviewing what's on those guidelines. I don't think a public ban list is a good idea (mainly cause with the amount of spambots we ban - it'd be a nightmare to keep a track of)

However, please remember, guidelines are just guidelines. Each mod has the right to act as they feel appropriate for the situation in hand.

Apologies, seems I haven't clarified before.

There is an established procedure for complaining to the board admins.

Yes, just kidding.
South American style 'disappearances' are probably more effective...

And here I was thinking that the guidelines was a framework that the board was to function within, constraining admins, moderators and members alike but, obviously, being implemented or enforced by admins and moderator.

Well, why don't you just sticky this as as the guideline instead?

Two similar discussions going on in two threads, anyway to merge them?
