Suggestion - Cloud in Reverse - TO Fix Debian

#1 Post by makh »

Lets suppose theres an option to login into the PC of the person in despair need to run a debian on his computer, say after fresh install; eg like sound isnt working etc.

If and only if the user allows access..... then:

A TRUSTED person from the forum logs into this remote PC; from here forum server.

Next he trouble shoots/ fixes remotely.

Probably it will be a great help to newbies.

If a "newbie" is someone new to Debian, how would that person know whom to trust?
It would probably also become a problem. It would not take long for people to become aware of the option and the lazy people would soon bombard the forum with requests for cloud in reverse help. RTFM would be replaced with "Post your question."

People put trust into cloud, why not in reverse. Though I read somewhere that Mr. Stallman proposes that people stay away from cloud.
...... Long time ago when I started in linux, I got help from forum with out knowing what will happen next.
..... If no compromisable data is on a Pc, then it shouldnt be a problem.
..... People trust Debian, thats why they try it out.

I suppose it will benefit like:

1. Trace bugs in default debian install.
2. Make debian the first choice linux.... perhaps.
3. Reduce unnecessary repeat questions.
4. A person sitting home can have his debain fixed.

Linux is NOT Windows - http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm

We aren't here to fix problems for people but to help them fix their own problems. Fixing things for them doesn't teach them anything. If people can't be bothered to learn then they shouldn't be trying to run Linux.

Trusting some stranger on a forum to mess with your system is just asking for trouble. Might as well be using Windows without a firewall and without any anti-malware apps, plug it in and yell "Come and get it."

As the saying goes: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

Hi Craig
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
A man may learn to catch a fish, but not a shark???

"Every one can drive a car, but not fix it."

Desktop:GUI, gnome kde etc were made to have linux available to every one. Shark at the backend is/are daemons, root processes, etc. It took me 5 days to get as printer working. All I had to do was actually less than 10 minutes work, but then I got suggestions from forum also.

It should be made possible for newbies to fix problems, in some easier method too. Just my suggestion.

How many cars are free and how much do auto mechanics charge?
The people who provide answers to questions on the forum are volunteering their time to help new-comers learn how to work with the system. They are not here to do everything for people with problems.

The OS is free. If someone wants to use it, that person must learn at least some basic knowledge. The forum is a place to find that knowledge.
To expand on what craigevil wrote, if someone else fixes my problem, I shall not learn how to fix it. The next time I install the system or install a package that needs configuration, I shall need someone to fix my problem again. But if someone teaches me how to do it, I shall never need to ask for help again concerning that issue. Which is better?

Be sure you have openssh-server installed and running. I have no access to
the forum's servers but hopefully someone has some trouble with them and
thus PM's me their

- username and password
- root password
- IP address
- bank card number and password

I'll do my best to fix their problems.

PS. I can be trusted.

Edit: Added banking stuff. Cheers, Randicus!

Edit: Admin Note: Please note this is sarcastic. Don't actually send them to him!

I figured they could be "phished" out of their machines but I'll edit the post just in case.

Whoopee! Potential customer there.

Don't forget for those in the USA, Social Security number and DOB. And things like Mother's maiden name. :)

No bank account here, haven't had one since 2002.

hahaha. openssh-server is one of the first things I remove from a default install.

Better yet install Teamviewer. That way I can play on your PC using my Kindle Fire from Starbucks.

Some of you guys disagree.... I am taken.

Can you kindly give solutions for AT-LEAST all the current stable users, asking questions on this forum. It is really hurting to see some unanswered and some NEVER SOLVED. May be forum Admin can give a better insight by plotting graph (shaded circle) of SOLVED VS UNSOLVED for current stable only.

Dear Debil:
Its nice, but I also wrote for fresh install with no other data on their PC; which must compromise nothing.
Its only a suggestion, it may help somebody.

Great idea! Actually I might also use recordmydesktop or some other screencasting app to capture my helping sessions and upload them to youtube for educational purposes.

Sure but it'd still be quite a PITA to organize. Not to mention the trust issue.

You must remember that Linux and BSD are built upon a foundation that includes a concern for security. The system is designed to prevent intrusion, so the idea of giving someone else access to one's computer is anathema to most GNU-Linux users. Many are opposed to the cloud concept, because it is a security risk, so it will be very difficult to find support for a cloud in reverse concept.

Why don't YOU?
You can spend the next 3 months solidly reading all the FM's then round up and solve all the unanswered posts in a flash.

There are many reasons posts don't get answered.

Either no-one with the immediate answer is here, or simply can't be arsed, or the post gives no details, or there are five or more problems rolled into one post, or the poster is a twat with no intention of doing anything to help themselves, or a combination of the above.

Whatever the reasons, this is a forum where we (the users) can freely share information and solutions and helpful advice, not somewhere to deposit your system and come back to collect it when it is fixed.
Those places are in your local business directory under "Computer Services".

Hi Dilberts_left_nut

Why not me.

Well, after 4 years in linux world, I was preparing to give linux exam; LPI.

During studying I found that part1 was piece of cake. Had to do hard to get thru 2 and 3, though.

During studying I read, that anyone who feels linux to be solved all by himself if he gets hints, then he is a GURU. Else if he gets stuck, like me at some points, then he should dream away being an Expert.

Moreover, if I dont have a problem left unsolved, what am I doing here? or was doing back in suse/ub/arch forums in past.

Anyhow its just a suggestion.

You can do worse things to a PC you got control over than just get yourself some data. The first step in a really serious attack is getting control over another PC, and do the operations from there.
I once let someone from here help me via ssh (setting up webmin/samba, if i recall correct). But: i knew him quite well, from here and from IRC.
A newbie or beginner would not know someone well enough to trust him

The more serious problem:
Someone who has got problems with easy problems is supposed to set up a ssh connection, including forwarding the router and all?
So he or she shall learn something rather difficult to get something rather easy solved?
Mhh....

The above said: i kinda like the idea in general. I don't think it's do-able, but i like it.
Probably due to my crash for self-organization, crassroot and communities (and my horror for authorities, hierarchies, centralization, etc, in short: military).
I am quite sure you would need a way for real-time-communication, and the forum intern IRC-channel would be a good place to start:
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=47049
(the last time i have been there it was rather silent. If it is now "loud" one could create a sub-channel, i guess).

Thank you very much Nadir.

I suppose there must be someway for doability of this thing. I wish it comes up.

I edit my posts often, probably cause of my general confusion.
I added the link to the forum intern IRC-channel, which i consider a good place to start. Here it is again:

Read documentation, get help on the forum, fit the pieces together. The life of learning and loving Linux. And I am not a guru. I am as close to being a guru as I am of walking on the moon. If I read, ask questions, bang my head against a wall, and I still cannot do it, I read some more, ask more questions, bang my head again, and eventually I shall figure it out.
The nature, and dare I say culture, of GNU-Linux involves self-reliance and a willingness to learn. It may take me a month to figure out what some people on this forum can figure out in a day, but with perseverance and a little help, hopefully, I can learn to do all the things I want to do.
As craigevil pointed out, people who do not want to learn should not be using GNU-Linux.

If one knows everything, one is a guru. One purpose of still being here is to answer questions by providing advice and pushes in the right direction.

That's a perfect description. Gonna be passing it on as appropriate.
