Typing sudo /sbin/ifconfig -a in a terminal or ifconfig -a in a root terminal will give you detailed information on network status. Example:dmesg|grep eth

I recently setup a network with machines running KDE on Debian, and Gnome on Ubuntu, and found it just faster and easier to manually edit /etc/network/interfaces
I always make a backup before making any changes to critical scripts. Example:
Vi is very cool, and very powerful, and very geeky, but I prefer nano for simple text editing.. Example:sudo cp /etc/network/interfaces /etc/network/interfaces.backup
will open the interfaces file for editing, with root privileges.. (as long as you are in the sudoers group).. An alternative is to just su to root, then run the nano command.sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
While setting up the network, it is faster to test /etc/network/interfaces with root commands. No need to reboot. Example:
stops the network,sudo ifdown eth0
starts it.sudo ifup eth0
