[SOLVED] new install: stable 64bit; problem with network

Postby debiman » 2013-03-12 07:49

hello to a new forum!

i would like to install debian on my ~5 year old laptop (msi vr601) on a spare logical partition on my first hd.
i put the netinstall iso on a usb stick, and everything works fine, also the network setup (unencrypted wlan, automatic dhcp setup).
at least i get no errors.
but when i try to setup a network mirror, it fails.
i tried many different things, http and ftp, different countries, different sites...
it always fails, and tells me to press ctrl+alt+f4 for more information, where it always says sth like
"wget (address) - no such file or directory."
(sorry, it's not very precise, i'm quoting from memory)

i tried the same with the 64bit stable full installation disks and get exactly the same errors.
however i can install what's on the iso and get a working desktop. then i install network manager, but it says "device not configured" iirc.
i can connect by typing:
Code: Select all
su
iwlist wlan0 scan
iwconfig wlan0 essid <myessid>
dhclient wlan0

(yes, it's unencrypted)
- but the network connection dies every 10min or so.

thanks for reading so far.
i'm sure the explanation or solution is somewhere out there, but i could not find it.

greetings.

d.

What's your hardware? In particular, what wireless card do you have? PCI or USB?

In the 64 bit case, what driver is being loaded?

thanks for answering!

- i'm not quite sure i understand. both cases are 64bit installation files, it's a 64bit capable laptop.
you mean which driver is loaded for the wireless card? it didn't ask me to put in any firmware so i guess it's something free and linux. how can i find out?
during the (hopefully network) install or after the offline install?
i'd prefer to go with the network install, though, if possible.

Sorry,
I completely forgot about this thread and to check whether there were any replies.

The 64 bit comment was because I misunderstood what you wrote i.e. that you did do a network install in the 64 bit case.

Anyway, I would guess that whatever driver is loaded isn't properly supporting your card, which is causing it to drop the connection. I've had similar issues with certain external wireless devices.

To find out what driver is loaded, do
Code: Select all
lspci -vv

and look at what it says under Kernel driver in use. If there's nothing, look at the lsmod output. Any athk5 module?

Some wireless cards will cause the 'wrong' driver to be loaded by default, and you might have to specify which module to load and blacklist all others.

Based on http://wiki.debian.org/ath5k the driver should be in the kernel though -- the question is what kernel/config is used during the installation process. You can also try loading firmware-atheros during installation (put the deb on a usb stick and insert it when asked about drivers).

What does your /etc/network/interfaces contain?
What does
Code: Select all
ifconfig -a
return?
Anything odd in the dmesg output?

Edit: fixed link to ath5k driver page

hello and thanks.

i have used the commands you gave 3 times: twice on my offline debian install - first offline, then after connecting to the internet with the commands from my 1st post - and once on a fresh crunchbang (based on debian 7.0) install that recognizes and connects automatically. same laptop, differnt partition.

the only difference i recognize as relevant is in /etc/network/interfaces.

i have attached the 3 files, edited.

can you make sth out of that that would help me with my network install?
i somehow feel the netinst would yield better, more customized results.

thanks,

d.

I would probably comment out the
Code: Select all
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
   wireless-mode managed
   wireless-essid wlan-ap

if you're going to use network manager to manage the device. You can put
Code: Select all
auto wlan0

instead if you want (http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debia ... 05.en.html). If the situation improves then there may have been a conflict with ifupdown, if it doesn't improve your issues are probably down to the driver.

As for everything working on #! during installation it's most likely due to the kernel. According to http://wiki.debian.org/ath5k the driver is in the kernel since 2.6.25. I don't know what kernel is used during debian stable installation (is it the latest stable kernel, or is it the same one as when stable was released?).

You might just want to go straight for Wheezy/Testing. It's been frozen since last (northern hemisphere) summer and is tried and tested. After all, Stable in debian terms just means that only a limited few types of package updates are allowed -- it doesn't mean bug-free. Going straight for Wheezy seems like an easier way of resolving all your issues. After installation, make sure that you /etc/apt/sources.list points to wheezy and not testing and you'll automatically transition to stable with wheezy when the time comes.

Postby debiman » 2013-03-16 08:48

hello and thanks again!

editing /etc/network/interfaces helped.
that's for a debian stable 64bit offline install made with the first official installation cd.

i tried the network install again on another free partition, first with squeeze 64bit - still not working - and then with wheezy 64bit, which worked flawlessly!
i suspect this is not about hardware drivers but about the download mirrors themselves (or about the installation routine checkng them out).
the athk5 driver is present on all my debian/debian-based installations.

summary:

1.
network install from debian-6.0.7-amd64-netinst.iso
(kernel during install: 2.6.32-5)
- setting up the network worked and i connected to an unencrypted wlan access point. (--> success, blue exclamation mark)
- selecting a network mirror did not work (red exclamation mark) - switching to tty4 with ctrl+alt+f4 shows this:
Code: Select all
choose-mirror [1433]: DEBUG: command: wget -q http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian//dists/squeeze/Release -O - | grep -E '^(Suite|Codename):'
choose-mirror [1433]: WARNING **: mirror does not support the specified release (squeeze)

my suspicion is that the internet address is either malformed or the directories on the servers have changed.
btw, i tried this with about 20 different mirrors, alway the same.

2.
network install from debian-wheezy-DI-rc1-amd64-netinst.iso
(kernel during install: 3.2.???)
- setting up the network ok
- choosing mirror and overall network install ok.
i had a look at tty4 and the wget address looked rather different, also the grep regex.

By 'helped', do you that mean that the network connection is stable now under Squeeze?

The mirror issue is odd:
Code: Select all
me@lithium:~$ wget -q http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian//dists/squeeze/Release -O - | grep -E '^(Suite|Codename):'
Suite: stable
Codename: squeeze

One would expect that to work for you as well. I normally do netinstalls with stable (all via cable) and have never had any issues..

If 20 servers all fail, my gut feeling is that it's not the fault of the servers, but with the way that squeeze sets itself up during installation on your hardware. So I'm not sure what's going on -- have you tried to wget a known file from somewhere else to make sure that it works? Poor connectivity due to buggy drivers can yield unexpected and not always obvious results.

i somehow feel the netinst would yield better, more customized results.

I'd probably just use wheezy and call it a day -- you don't get the elegance of a network install, but in terms of the installed system, there is no difference whatsoever -- netiso installs aren't slimmer, more customised or more optimised than DVD installs.

OPs: don't forget to mark your (first) post as solved when the issue has been resolved.

i just tried it on the installed squeeze and get the exact same result as you.

yes, i think so too.

thanks verahill!

it's not really solved but gives some kind of answer to people who might encounter similar problems, so i'm marking it as solved.

Re: [SOLVED] new install: stable 64bit; problem with network

So this post is old and says solved, but its really not.
I've been having problems with my wlan0 interface on my debian laptop. The usual iteration of ifconfig, iw, iwlist, ip route, /etc/network/interfaces, and service networking restart DID NOT WORK for me.
Here's my solution and I hope this helps anyone else suffering with this bug.

What worked: add the following two lines in /etc/sysctl.conf and reboot.

net.ipv4.conf.all.autoconf=1
net.ipv6.conf.all.autoconf=1

Not sure which line is responsible for allowing DHCPDISCOVER to work - but it does.

I had a similar problem on Linux Mint 17, getting this in syslog:
Mar 22 14:34:46 machine kernel: [ 20.238609] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready

Adding those two lines fixed the problem.

I think this was self-inflicted. I was trying to use the wirless connection as a bridge, which apparently is impossible.

Thank you for the suggestion, shahifaqeer

I had the same problem with Linux Mint 17.

My solution has been to edit /etc/network/interfaces to remove everything except:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
mouton
