Open Terminal
Input: lspci |grep Network
What is the output?
Or what wireless card do you have?

Re: Got Debian XCFE on laptop everything works but wifi...
If this is Debian Wheezy, the device ID database it ships with is getting old. If you have a wired connection, open a terminal and execute these two commands (you can copy and paste them in there)
After this, repeat the lspci procedure to see it it can find the wifi device.
Also try it with the lsusb command, just in case it's an internal USB wifi device--they do exist.
Also, if it's still got Windows on it, see if you have any hardware ID apps on it that could lend a clue. Also most laptops have an FCC sticker somewhere on the bottom that tells what the device is. If it's not on the bottom, it could be on or inside the battery, or on the inside of a removable plate. In the US, they are required to have this sticker someplace.
Code: Select all
su -c update-pciids
su -c update-usbids

I don't have windows installed anymore... ok just downloaded the updates... Trying to figure out my wireless card and wireless tools now. I'm going to check around my laptop for stickers regarding this.stevepusser wrote:If this is Debian Wheezy, the device ID database it ships with is getting old. There's posts on other forums about wifi for the g50, but there are several different models of the g50. Can you find the full model number, maybe on a sticker? An example is Lenovo g50-70.
Failing that, does "the "lspci" command now show two networking devices? There should be the wired and the wireless adapters showing.

Re: Got Debian XCFE on laptop everything works but wifi...
I had to drop out last night because it was half past midnight local time...
There is stuff about your wifi card, the Realtek Semiconductor Co. Ltd. Device b723 being on the edge of supported because it is so "new".
There is some stuff about it being supported by the more recent kernels. What version of Debian are you using and what kernel do you have?
I think I may have come across this wifi card before and my advice then was to (temporarily) invest in a USB wireless dongle until things get sorted out. With the advent of the RaspberriPi there are some cheap units about. I think the Edimax cost me very little...

Re: Got Debian XCFE on laptop everything works but wifi...
If it's that one that the driver only appeared in the 3.15 kernel, we do have a Wheezy-compatible backport of the 3.16 Liquorix kernel and headers here: http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/testr ... -liquorix/, since I think wheezy-backports is only up to 3.14.
You'll also need the latest firmware-realtek: https://packages.debian.org/sid/firmware-realtek
Firmware packages from upstream are safe to install in Stable.

Re: Got Debian XCFE on laptop everything works but wifi...
Wow, out of nowhere, there's a host of posts about this wifi chipset, the rtl8723BE.
What kernel you need depends on if you are running 32 or 64-bit. You can see what system you have by running
in the terminal. The liquorix kernel also has some optional metapackages that handle upgrade jumps, say from the 3.15 to the 3.16 version, but they only are of use if the repo is added to your sources. Otherwise, to directly install a downloaded deb with gdebi (the recommended program for installing local deb files), just run the following command in the terminal:
32-bit kernel and header packages:
64-bit:
The debs will end up in the folder you open the terminal from, or in your home folder if you did not open it in a folder. After you install gdebi, clicking a deb file should open in up for installations in the gdebi GUI.
Keep your original kernel so you can reboot to it if these don't work for some reason. After installing the debs, run
in the terminal to make sure the new kernel is added to the GRUB boot menu, which is the first thing you see after the machine gets past self checking in the startup.
Eventually, the wheezy-backports kernel should be upgraded to 3.16, and you can try that if you wish. The Liquorix kernel is supposed to be a low-latency kernel (fast desktop response), and has a lot of patches and customizations that the Debian kernel does not have, but it does not support PAE (useful for 4+GB of RAM on 32 bit machines)
