[solved] Boot problems since Jessie

Help with issues regarding installation of Debian

Re: Upgrade to Jessie killed my system

Postby fireburner » 2015-05-09 21:51

Okay, I have some news for you:
I decided installing a fresh jessie.
But second boot again gives me ata errors and stops booting.
I also tried to set jumper to cable select like mentioned in the linked SUSE forum, but this doesn't change anything.
So i did boot a live system and ran badblocks -nvs on the whole disk and it brought up not a single error.
Though smartools show a warning with the realocated sector count which is 17 (raw) and 99 normal value.
Don't know if this is critical.

Anyone any idea what I could try next? (Windows on that disk is still running without any problem)
Debian stable i686 (jessie) with LXDE
on Dell Latitude D610 with Intel Pentium M 740 (Dothan)
and Intel 915GM chipset with integrated graphics

Re: Upgrade to Jessie killed my system

I reinstalled again, then it booted a few times without problems (I didn't do much on the system) and afterwards it started having problems again:
sometimes it only provides me with a emergency shell, sometimes it still starts the window manager and I can use my desktop.

This is the log of the first error with cryptsetup: (sda6 is encrypted swap)

How about memory test?

Though smartools show a warning with the realocated sector count which is 17 (raw) and 99 normal value.
Don't know if this is critical.

It may be.
"e2fsck -f -y -c -c" is better than "badblocks".

Well isn't fsck just for the filesystem itself?
And when I reinstalled jessie, I did let the installer create the encrypted filesystem again, so it should be a completely new filesystem now, which shouldn't break after >5 reboots.
But I can try your command.

You can try it if the filesystem is ext2 or ext3 or ext4. You will realize by yourself that fsck can find badblocks and work around badblocks.
Instead of complaining, how about reading the manual?
Code: Select all
man badblocks

Important note: If the output of badblocks is going to be fed to the
e2fsck or mke2fs programs, it is important that the block size is prop-
erly specified, since the block numbers which are generated are very
dependent on the block size in use by the filesystem. For this reason,
it is strongly recommended that users not run badblocks directly, but
rather use the -c option of the e2fsck and mke2fs programs.

You may doubt as you like. Again I want to tell you that I do not insist my guess is correct. I just wanted to help you.

I'm having exactly the same problem after upgrade to Jessie. Booting with sysvinit helps, it shows the same slow dma error, but succeeds in starting LDM and logging in. Guess it has something to do with the hardware and systemd, although i have a triple boot sytem with Fedora 21 and Archbang, both systemd and LVM + encryption. Fedora did have some similar problems in the beginning after upgrade from 19 to 21 but they disappeared after i disabled diskchecking at boot in fstab. Don't like to disable that but i'm gone give it a try with jessie too. BTW the hardware is a Samsung NC 20 and thats why i'm suspecting it has something to do with the hardware.
Edit: disabling fsck in fstab gives a normal boot. But that is a workaround (for me). Don't know where to search what's causing the problem and also why i'm not getting this with Arch.

Sorry, If I may have offended you.

I will try your suggestion.
May I ask what the second -c is for, couldn't find that in manüage?
Thx!

OK.
fireburner wrote:I will try your suggestion.

You need not.
First, read the above post of TiPo and/or
Release Notes for Debian 8 (jessie)
5.6.1. Stricter handling of failing mounts during boot under systemd
such as (for i386)
https://www.debian.org/releases/jessie/ ... s-incompat
The new default init system, systemd-sysv, has a stricter handling of failing "auto" mounts during boot compared to sysvinit. If it fails to mount an "auto" mount (without the "nofail" option), systemd will drop to an emergency shell rather than continuing the boot.

We recommend that all removable or "optional" mount points (e.g. non-critical network drives) listed in /etc/fstab either have the "noauto" or the "nofail" option.

I may be wrong.

fireburner wrote:May I ask what the second -c is for, couldn't find that in manüage?

Please read manual:
Code: Select all
man e2fsck

-c This option causes e2fsck to use badblocks(8) program to do a
read-only scan of the device in order to find any bad blocks.
If any bad blocks are found, they are added to the bad block
inode to prevent them from being allocated to a file or direc-
tory. If this option is specified twice, then the bad block
scan will be done using a non-destructive read-write test.

Btw. I didi run your suggestion, it said, it found 0.2% of the file system be altered and changed it.
Afterwards, nothing changed: system will boot sometimes and sometimes just hangs and not even give me a shell (ata1: SRST failed (errno=-16)

2. Be descriptive. Use a meaningful headline and try to make your question as clear as possible. Include as much information as possible such as what Debian branch you are using, error messages, what you did that may have caused the problem etc. This greatly increase the chances of getting useful help.

Well I was not talking about fstab and the post of TiPo.
I was just asking about your suggested command, which i could also understand with manpage. The only thing I could not find was, why you were adding -c 2 times?
And I never asked you for spoon feeding. I just maybe asked some stupid questions.
And I never wanted to remove systemd and use sysvinit. I don't know how you think I asked you to tell me how to remove it, sorry.

Back to the command run last night
Code: Select all
e2fsck -f -y -c -c

It told me something, about it had changed something, but after running again, it was exactly the same message.
And well afterwards, I could only be lucky and get to LDM or get a hang while booting with above specified ata error. (50%-50% chance).

Nevertheless, until the mystery of this problem is solved, I changed my fstab and removed files system check for my root partition, and guess what? It now boots every time.
Thank you TiPo for that advice.
Still I see this as a temporary way to run my system until the mystery is solved. Maybe I should create a bug report?

p.s. @kiyop, I think we misunderstood ourselves a little bit. Never wanted to offend you!

Beware, disabling fsck in fstab is a work-around, not a solution. I'm still getting the errors but i'm able to log-in. Did some research and maybe it's having something to do with ACPI. I'm going to start a new thread with my problem description, may take a while cause i want to give all the necessary info.

Good news:
removing the hdparm package seems to have solved the errors. I think it was installed with laptop-mode-tools.
After removing hdparm I rechanged root device to 1 (instead of 0) in ftsab (fsck check at boot) and my system boots without any errors.
But I still need to check if Plymouth will work now, too.

How can I write a bug report concerning my problem with hdparm causing a systemd + luks encrypted volumes to fail while booting?

Re: Upgrade to Jessie killed my system

Postby dasein » 2015-05-22 00:28

Sorry for coming so late to this party, and I don't have any fix for anything systemd-related (except the obvious one). But for the benefit of posterity...

Zero-filling a disk with dd accomplishes much the same thing as badblocks and takes way less time. (Handling bad/marginal disk sectors is handled by firmware on any modern HDD.)

Research has shown that reallocated sector count is one of the few SMART parameters that is of any utility at all in predicting disk failure. If you're getting a warning about RSC and haven't done a full backup recently, then now (as in right now) would be a really, really good time to "get around to it."
