[SOLVED] Can't create bootable USB

Postby paulomorais » 2015-05-15 17:01

Hello,

I'm having a problem creating an USB bootable pendrive, with Debian Jessie stable.

I've downloaded the ISO from the site (I have tried with two versions, netinst and gnome). I tried to create the bootable pendrive with the command dd.

Code: Select all
dd if=debian-etcetcetc.iso of=/dev/sdb

I put two pendrives that i've dd'ed them on the usb ports, and then typed fdisk -l, it returned this:

Code: Select all
Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sdb1 * 64 2978975 2978912 1,4G 17 Hidden HPFS/NTFS

Disco /dev/sdc: 7,3 GiB, 7784628224 bytes, 15204352 setores
Unidades: setor de 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Tamanho de setor (lógico/físico): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Tamanho E/S (mínimo/ótimo): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Tipo de rótulo do disco: dos
Identificador do disco: 0x58dde606

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sdc1 * 64 2978975 2978912 1,4G 17 Hidden HPFS/NTFS

However, i tried to boot this two pendrives in three PCs and it was not recognized by anyone as bootable system.

What's maybe the problem?

Thx

Just to confirm...you have changed the Boot Order/BIOS to boot from the USB before the Hard Drive?

Please provide links to the exact site from which you downloaded the ISO images.

Did you check the md5sums?

Have you disabled Secure Boot on the machines you have tried?

Thanks for responding. Well, that's the answers.

you have changed the Boot Order/BIOS to boot from the USB before the Hard Drive?

Yes. I've also accessed the boot menu to confirm that the system was going to try booting via USB.

Please provide links to the exact site from which you downloaded the ISO images.

http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/cur ... so.torrent
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/8.0 ... so.torrent

Did you check the md5sums?

No. I've downloaded if from official links, i really didn't do this.

Have you disabled Secure Boot on the machines you have tried?

The machines are old ones, and they already have linux installations on it. In my machine, i've installed Debian Jessie via the same netinst ISO that i'm trying to install on my wife's PC. The problem is that I used a CD on my computador, but my wife's PC doesn't have a CD reader, then I really need to use a USB stick.

It's a really weird thing here.

The dd command has always worked for me here. Couple things are you sure the download is good and it's a bootable image?

you might want to give unetbootin a try see if that will do it for you.
you can get it here:

Well... I am. Because I've burned the same ISO image on a CD and it booted. The question is the machine I want to install it doesn't have CD reader.

you might want to give unetbootin a try see if that will do it for you.

I've cogitated it. But i've downloaded the unetbootin.bin file from the official site and, despite I've marked the option "open file as executable", it didn't opened on my debian. Also, Debian does not have unetbootin on the repositories. So, I've downloaded live-usb-install.deb from other site and installed my debian jessie ISO to the stick, and it did not worked too.

down load the unetbootin .deb package from here https://packages.debian.org/sid/unetbootin
install it with gdebi (if it's not installed, install it
Code: Select all
su
apt-get install gdebi

also you will have to install extlinux file
Code: Select all
apt-get install extlinux

even though it's a sid package it runs fine on Debian Jessie.
unetbootin will download and install the net-install.iso for you.

Good Luck

P.S. just had another thought also some machines expect the usb stick to be formated with a ntfs or fat partition could that be the problem with the wife's machine?

@kc1di -- unetbootin has been reported to cause many problems with Debian ISO images, I have participated in threads in these forums in which such problems have occured; have you looked at the bug report I linked?

Advising people to use sid packages in Debian Stable is not a good idea -- it may work fine now but what if somebody follows your advice a year (or more) from now?

@OP: A simpler method is to use:
Code: Select all
# cat debian.iso > /dev/sdX

Or:
Code: Select all
# cp debian.iso /dev/sdX
# sync

As advised in the official installation guide.
https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/ ... -isohybrid

Having said all this, the `dd` command you have used should also work...

Please download an image directly from this site and check the md5sums before transferring the image to your USB stick:
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unoff ... -firmware/

down load the unetbootin

I too have heard unebootin will not work with Debian, my experience, unebootin did not work.
This did work for me
Code: Select all
dd bs=4M if=/home/garry/Downloads/yourdebian.iso of=/dev/sdc && sync

where it says home/garry/Downloads,would be your path to your iso.
For details: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=121294#p573574
For me it was Wheezy, not Jessie, but I that should not matter.
Your code:
Code: Select all
dd if=debian-etcetcetc.iso of=/dev/sdb

the difference:
Code: Select all
dd bs=4M if=debian-etcetcetc.iso of=/dev/sdc && sync

Ok, guys, by now I'm re-downloading a version directly from debian.org (not torrent), check the md5sum and I will try to re-dd it. It will delay... but soon i can post the results here.

Well, i really don't understand what was the huge mistery that causes the USB sticks not bootable. I've tried another times here, with other ISOs and still couldn't do it.

So, the way I found to resolve the problem is the not recommended one.

In my wife's Ubuntu 12 PC, I've used unetbootin with the netinstall (downloaded by unetbootin) version of debian on the stick and it finally booted.

So i had a stick with a minimal non-graphic installer, which downloaded everything during the proccess, including the kernel.

In spite of this is not the recommended way, it worked for me (sorry abouth that!). And the problem I had with the other sticks will remain forever as a huge mistery of humanity.

Thank you guys. Regards.
