What is the second DVD used for. Is it all the sources like with Suse Linux. Or does it contain more packages for the installation

It contains more packages. It is 14 CDs or 2 DVDs for the complete Debian set. The most often installed packages are closer to the begining of the set. Some of the more recent additions to Debian are near the end like Gnomebaker on CD #12.
