4K on Debian Dell 13-5378 (Inspiron 13 5000 i5) only 2048 x

#1 Post by akrueger »

EDIT: This thread started off with a USB conundrum, but evolved into a general problem solving thread how to install a fully functioning Debian / free OS on the relatively new "Dell Inspiron 13 5000 i5" (similar to this 13-5378).

Chronological history of thread titles:
  • debian-8.6.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso fails to work on USBstick
  • deb-8.6.0-DVD-1.iso fails on USB3 on Dell 13-5378 (SOLVED)
  • Debian on Dell 13-5378 (Inspiron 13 5000 i5) - wifi howto?
  • Debian on Dell 13-5378 (Dell Inspiron 13 5000 i5)
  • Debian Dell 13-5378 (Inspiron 13 5000 i5) right mouse button - unsolved
  • 4K on Debian Dell 13-5378 (Inspiron 13 5000 i5) only 2048 x 1152 not 4k - unsolved
---------------------------- original post: -------------------------------------------------

fresh installation --> "Detect and mount CDROM"

Error messages:
  • ... your installation CDROM couldn't be mounted ... CDROM not in the drive ...
  • ... does not seem to contain a valid Release file
  • ... error reading from the CDROM ... failed to copy from CDROM ...
This is what I have done:
  • downloaded debian-8.6.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso
  • used win32DiskImager to burn it to a USB stick
  • booted the "Dell Inspiron 13 5000 i5" (Dell 13-5378) with pressing F12, chose boot from usbstick
  • tried out all the different possibilities (graphical install, expert install, ...)
  • used below commands, and tried again to read from that fake "cdrom"
I've tried these commands in the shell:

Code: Select all

cat /var/logs/syslog
my USB stick seems to be sdb sdb1 sdb2

Code: Select all

mkdir /cdrom
mount /dev/sdb /cdrom
mount -o vfat /dev/sdb /cdrom
mount /dev/sdb1 /cdrom
mount /dev/sdb2 /cdrom
most of them resulted in error messages, like:
  • no such file or directory
  • invalid argument
(WHY do I have to open a shell at all, for a simple install? Why doesn't the Debian installer notice itself, that it is NOT started from a CDROM, but from a USBSTICK ? )

Next thing I will try when I have time next time ... is using the https://www.debian.org/CD/live/

but perhaps you are sure about the sequence of actions, and commands, which will fix the above userunfriendliness. Or very probably there is already a readme page on debian.org to which you could point me, because I have not been able to find it.

Please help. I really do not want to use ubuntu, if I can avoid it.

Thanks a lot!

This should work when you boot the machine. Is your BIOS set to read USB first?

Thanks.

I have tried that now. Same effect.

Would have also surprised me, as I had manually chosen (F12) to boot into that stick - and how would the installer know whether I did that manually, or whether the UEFI decided to boot it first?
Thanks.

Yes I had found that page already.

Which commands do you suggest to me to try out in the (installer) console, to mount the USBstick to pretend it were a CDROM ?

What about letting go of the old word "CDROM" as more and more machines are sold without anyways?

Where is the best place to report his bug?

Thanks.

Basically the USB stick boots and errors out? I'd say your USB controller is not supported by DVD kernel. Are you using a USB-3 port? Have you tried USB-2?

I have now successfully installed Ubuntu; all is working, only the sound device is not yet recognized.
Can I perhaps use this Ubuntu Installation to find out more about the machine - which could then help to install Debian?

Segfault wrote:Basically the USB stick boots and errors out?
Thanks.

Yes.

It boots into the installation procedure, I can choose language, keyboard, etc. - but then the above error messages come when "Detect and mount CDROM".
And the "failed to copy from ..." after I had fiddled in the commandline.

Segfault wrote:I'd say your USB controller is not supported by DVD kernel. Are you using a USB-3 port? Have you tried USB-2?
Thanks

That was a very good idea.

Yes, now it (that part of the installation) is working.

What an odd situation - the installer itself can be started via USB 3, but the "Mount CDROM ..." cannot.
Perhaps Debian 8.7.0 could take some inspiration from Ubuntu 16.04.1, because it has no such problem.

I am changing the title of this thread.

Where is the "close issue" button * g *

Thanks everyone, very helpful!

You should try the installer from testing, that will probably support your hardware better:

https://www.debian.org/devel/debian-ins ... 6/20161112

Be aware that this is a beta release and may be broken in other ways.
Perhaps Debian 8.7.0 could take some inspiration from Ubuntu 16.04.1, because it has no such problem.
The release cycle of Debian means that the stable release (jessie) is now pretty old and brand new hardware tends to be poorly supported at this stage.

You would be well advised to carefully consider your future hardware purchases in respect of operating system support ;)

That is not for me then, though.

That ubuntu 16.04.1 is also July 2016

Good point.

That machine however, is popular, and for a reason; it is beautiful, can be extended to 16GB RAM, and just dropped in price again this month. Hard to resist. And as I am buying for 5 or 6 years, I am going for the newest generation.

Would you then perhaps advise to first use Ubuntu for a while, until Debian has caught up with -then not anymore- brand new hardware?

Another idea/question:
Which hardware4linux sites do you know?

I imagine a huge wiki where each mark&model has each one page, and we can all collectively improve the knowledge about which distribution/driver/hack works best on that particular hardware.

Thanks a lot!

I am not sure what is intended by your remark but I would urge you to familiarise yourself further with the Debian development cycle and the priorities of the developers; for example, a fixed, unchanging API is considered far more important than hardware support for brand new devices.
Would you then perhaps advise to first use Ubuntu for a while, until Debian has caught up with -then not anymore- brand new hardware?
Well, I would always recommend Parabola for users who need newer packages, I suppose Arch would do in a pinch if you have a particularly blobby machine...

Anyway, stretch has just entered the "soft freeze" and so should be available as Debian 9.0 sometime in the Autumn (ish).
Which hardware4linux sites do you know?
None.

EDIT: actually, that's a lie

https://wikidevi.com/

I refer to the relevant man pages for details of driver support.

Makes sense.

blobby = ?

Parabola, interesting, first time I see this.
As we are using arch in the office, double interesting.

Do these 4.4, 4.7, 4.9 in https://www.parabola.nu/packages/?sort=&q=kernel mean the kernel version number?

I am asking because I probably have an "Intel Wireless 3165" wifi card (very useful page, by the way), and this Intel page says "Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 (starting from firmware XX.XX.13.0 and kernel 4.1)". Which could explain why the Wifi is detected automatically in Ubuntu (kernel 4.4.0), and not in jessie-stable (3.16.0) - is that the right thinking?

... can I simply take that "iwlwifi-7265-ucode-25.30.14.0.tgz" from the Intel page, and my wifi will work?
Head_on_a_Stick wrote: Anyway, stretch has just entered the "soft freeze" and so should be available as Debian 9.0 sometime in the Autumn (ish).
If I understand the top table on this security-tracker.debian.org correctly, then I have to go for "stretch", to have a kernel above that threshold version 4.1 ? Or could I also only install a newer kernel in jessie-stable?

Alternatively, I could simply buy a different wifi card, right?
Not sure whether unscrewing the laptop could result in possibly loosing my warranty?
The procedure itself does not look difficult.

Which debian compatible, affordable Wifi card do you recommend?

I was referring to any non-free firmware that may be required by your hardware, see here for details:

https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware

One of the reasons I use Debian is because they supply a "de-blobbed" kernel and clearly separate the non-free software in the repositories but I appreciate that not everybody shares my political views :)

Parabola is to Arch as Debian is to Ubuntu, at least in respect of non-free software.

I can make no personal recommendations, sorry, I am seldom in the position to be able to buy hardware :(

Atheros cards are OK and require no non-free firmware, apparently.

For more, ask Mother startpage.

I see.

I might be a bit older, i.e. partly disillusioned. But I am definitely willing to learn and do what is possible.
However, not more. So if there is no alternative to biting into a sour apple, I will ;-)

Thanks for your pointers into freedom! Just updated tribler, haven't used that in a long time, downloading the Parabola torrent as we speak.

Got it.

So Parabola has newer kernels (than Debian).
But is there a way to find out before, whether parabola supports above mentioned wifi card?

Without wifi, nor ethernet (one drawback of that beautiful machine)? Quite a stunt, I imagine.

Thanks. That route is my second choice (even though they seem to be really affordable). First I wanna try the software solution path.

Indeed :)

The standard technique is to use whichever device you are posting here with to download the relevant .deb files [1] and then transfer them to your Debian box and install them with gdebi.

Fantastic, thanks.
The standard won't load anymore (gets stuck on black screen with cursor at top left), but the "4.8.0 recovery mode" is booting into a shell. So I thought perhaps I get the wlan going from there, and then install a newer kernel via apt (instead of / additional to those 3 gdebi files)

But this is what I can see:

Code: Select all

lspci
Network Controller: Intel Corporation Device 3165 (rev 79)

ip link
... link/loopback ...
So my device seems to get recognized, but

Code: Select all

iw dev
shows nothing. So there is no wlan0 (wlp1s0) device, yet.

Tried the Parabola live system: Exactly the same as above.

Back to ubuntu:

Code: Select all

lspci
Network Controller: Intel Corporation Device 3165 (rev 79)

iw dev
phy#0 ...
            Interface wlp1s0 ...
                               channel 6 (2437 MHz) ...

ip link
1: lo ...
2: wlp1s0 ... state UP
So ... ?

If you love cats so much ... why not. Personally I'd prefer to give to (you or) a Linux related charity.

I have searched around, but debian.org donations has no Bitcoin address - here are some 2014 arguments why it could be a good idea, but they did not seem interested. Actually, linuxmint does give a Bitcoin address (and a mintcoin address) for donations - but I guess that is a completely different animal for you, right?
