HP Pavilion ak085na - no bootable device.
HP Pavilion ak085na - no bootable device.
Abstract: i have tried to install both Debian and Ubuntu more times than I can remember and I cannot get either work. The installation appears to work successfully but when I restart the machine it displays the following error message: No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key
Background:
The machine originally operated with Windows 10, but the hard drive failed and I switched it out for a SanDisk SSD that I was using successfully in another machine. I want to use Debian as the only operating system on this machine (HP Pavilion ak085na).
When the original hard disc failed error messages displayed during the boot processes alerting the user that "smart HD check failed" and that no operating system was found. Since replacing the hard drive and installing Linux these error messages are still displayed on every reboot. to get past the errors I have to press f9 to see boot options; when I select the item pertaining to the Debian/SSD the error above is displayed (no bootable device...)
In BIOS I have enabled Legacy Mode and disabled Secure Boot.
I posted on the Hewlett-Packard forum about 2 days ago and have no response from any employee, which is brilliant of course (not)! I am sincerely hoping that users here will be more helpful, as has been the case in the past.
I'm desperate to find a solution!
Thanks for reading,
Samuel.

Re: HP Pavilion ak085na - no bootable device.
my guess is that it's not a linux issue, but that your hard drive is not installed properly.
- go into bios and see if it recognizes the new drive
- during installation, did you install to that drive?
- are there any other drives?

Re: HP Pavilion ak085na - no bootable device.
(Source: HP Support Forum)The main cause for the no boot device issue is when the MBR is damaged or missing.
I'd give this tool / howto a try...
Re: HP Pavilion ak085na - no bootable device.
BIOS appears to be recognising the new drive - please see screen photo- go into bios and see if it recognizes the new drive

- are there any other drives?
Yes - to the best of my knowledge I did install to the Sandisk SSD
The only other drive is a Lexar USB drive containing installation ISO.
Here is the output of $ sudo fdisk -l

Re: HP Pavilion ak085na - no bootable device.
In order to boot GPT disk in CSM mode you probably need to create protective (fake) MBR, and, some BIOS'es require it marked bootable as well. Is there gdisk utility on the installation CD? It will create protective MBR for you.
Re: HP Pavilion ak085na - no bootable device.
I'm using a live Ubuntu atm (as I only have the Netinst of Jessie). It has gdisk, but I've never used it before and am a little out of my depth. I did a quick google for "gdisk create protective mbr" and nothing obvious was contained in the results. Please could you provide some pointers?Segfault wrote:In order to boot GPT disk in CSM mode you probably need to create protective (fake) MBR, and, some BIOS'es require it marked bootable as well. Just run gdisk on your drive and it will create fake MBR automatically,

Try writing with w, if this does not suffice go r and b. If you break it you get to keep the pieces. You can use the b from main menu to back up first.

I have no idea what you mean lol, I'll read the link now... When you say keep the pieces, I can't do any permanent damage here, can I? Just format, reinstall and i'll be in the same position again?Segfault wrote:Try writing with w, if this does not suffice go r and b. If you break it you get to keep the pieces. Unfortunately nothing significant appears to have changed. Please see the video I have created showing exactly what happens during the start-up procedures. I dropped my phone at the end so sorry about that!) Http://youtu.be/BDYvx2Nrffk[/url]

Re: HP Pavilion ak085na - no bootable device.
To boot a disk with a GUID partition table in non-UEFI mode with the GRUB bootloader, a BIOS boot partition is needed.
You can use gdisk to create this — use sectors 34-2047 (these will be empty in a correctly-aligned drive) and select partition type EF02 when prompted; *do not* attempt to apply a filesystem to this new partition, it should be un-formatted.
The usual `grub-install` can then be used and the Debian installer should also then proceed on that drive without error.
However, non-UEFI booting with a GPT disk is not guaranteed and is entirely firmware-dependent.
For full support, use a GPT disk with a UEFI installation or have a non-UEFI system on a traditional "MBR-style" (msdos) partition table.

Re: HP Pavilion ak085na - no bootable device.
I'd use some other bootloader. Grub2 just does not make sense to me, maybe because none of my boxes dual-boot. To boot a single OS Grub2 is an overkill, IMHO.
One of my computers boots GPT disk in CSM mode, I had to use regular fdisk to mark partition bootable, otherwise the firmware didn't boot it. I could not find this function in gdisk, FYI fdisk supports GPT now.
