Problem uninstalling
Problem uninstalling
So I have dual booted Debian and windows 10 and now I decided to get rid of it because I didn't use it often. But I was stupid and gone into the windows partition manager and deleted Debian off the drive. Now at boot I have grub rescue. I do not have an installation disk. I have on my computer a windows boot loader and windows itself. Is it possible to get to the windows boot loader from grub rescue? Or do you guys have any solutions?

It is not clear what "it" is, which one did you want to get rid of ?

If it was Debian, and now your windows 10 does not work, that is to
bad, but I don't know about windows, never have used it.
A windows forum would be a better place to ask.
If "it" was windows, good decision, and if it is Debian that won't boot, maybe
we can help you.
If you accidental deleted Debian, and that was what you wanted to keep,
you will need to make a installation CD, or usb stick,...
If you deliberately deleted Debian, that was a very bad decision, you choose to keep the MS malware, ask them how to fix their malware.

Re: Problem uninstalling
Let me explain a bit better. I have 2 drives.
Drive 1
Windows 10 (keep)
Debian (Deleted --> grub rescue)
Drive 2 (completely empty)
Solus (will be installed)
But before installing the new os I have a few questions.
Will installing the new os fix the problem?
Will I be able to boot into windows 10?
If not, how will I be able to?
Also the cause of the grub rescue is "no such partition".

Windows 10 (keep)
Debian (Deleted --> grub rescue)
Drive 2 (completely empty)
Solus (will be installed)

I was going to ask , What is the new OS ? but then I noticed:
I do not know what "Solus" is, but I do know it is not Debian,...so you still are on the wrong forum, this is Debian User Forums

Since this is not the "Solus" forum, and also I have no idea if "solas" will work or not,...
If you want to install "Solas" ask them , they do have some kind of support don't they ? You can do a search to find it, or do you need someone to do that for you ?
Probably you need to re-install grub, to the windows partition.
Windows is NOT Debian, I have no idea nor interest in how to install grub, to that malware,...but I am sure a search would get results,...
As for installing Solus, or whatever other OS, you need to ask them.
Sorry ,...have a good day.
==== edit ===
I am not trying to be mean or rude, and just to show,
I looked up/searched , for you, there is a Solus forum:
https://solus-project.com/forums/
Installing a new OS on a different drive, is not going to fix the problemsWill installing the new os fix the problem?
you have with Windows, on the other drive,...but again, this is not a "windows" forum, it is for Debian users,... with problems on their Debian systems,...
it is not a general help forum, for just any OS or distro.

Re: Problem uninstalling
If I may speak
It appears the OP deleted the Debian install and since he installed Debian GRUB took over as the boot loader.
Since he deleted it now the boot loader is trashed.
He might try some boot repair disk either LInux or Windows and that might get him up and running again.

Re: Problem uninstalling
Agreed, if the OP re-installs grub to the windows partition, it should boot,
but since Windows is not Debian, and I have never used windows, I have no idea
what is involved in installing or re-installing grub,...
Since it is windows,. they would want a "windows boot repair" disk,...
ahh, now that I am thinking about it,
Hirens boot cd
Is great for that, a friend of mine that does repairs on Windows machines and runs a internet cafe, which are all windows machines, he use that to boot and repair the boot loader,.. there are details in the above search results.
===edited===
In the search results, there are several sites claiming to have downloads,...
I recommend only using the original site of "Hiren"
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/

Re: Problem uninstalling
I daresay no one here runs Solus, so all anyone can do is offer a well-educated guess. A more trustworthy answer would be available in the Solus forums.Escept wrote:Will installing the new os fix the problem?
And now, you're asking a bunch of Debianites about the best way to restore the Win10 bootloader. Although there are a couple of Windows experts hereabouts, I suspect you'll get a better answer in a Windows-centric venue.Escept wrote:Will I be able to boot into windows 10?

Re: Problem uninstalling
If the Debian system was installed in UEFI mode then the GRUB bootloader can be purged from the motherboard NVRAM boot list from a "live" UEFI-capable ISO image [1] by using efibootmgr(8).
Use this to list all of the UEFI boot entries:
Then use this to delete the GRUB entry, replace xxxx with the actual BootNumber (as found from the previous command):
Alternatively, simply re-arrange the boot order with:
[1] We have a UEFI-capable "live" image here: https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=3423
Use this to list all of the UEFI boot entries:
Code: Select all
# efibootmgr
Code: Select all
# efibootmgr -b xxxx -B
Code: Select all
# efibootmgr -o xxxx,yyyy,zzzz

Re: Problem uninstalling
Just reinstalling Windows will wipe out Debian, but I don't wish that on anyone.
If the Solus installer has half a brain, it will let you install it's GRUB and everyone will be happy.
On my laptop UEFI setup, I can add, remove, or rearrange the boot order of the various boot manager EFI files in there. YMMV.
I wonder if doing a websearch for uninstalling Debian from a dual boot system would have helped beforehand...
