Install Debian on Lenovo Thinkpad T420 issues

#1 Post by Compudionux »

Hello everyone. Let me first say that I've installed Debian 8 Cinnamon and upgraded to Debian 9 on a project computer but thats about the extent of my Debian knowledge. I loved the way Debian 9 Cinnamon worked that I wanted to also install it on my Lenovo Thinkpad T420 and ran into issues during my install of Debian 8. I received the following message about missing firmware:
"The missing firmware files are: iwlwifi-6000g2a-6.ucode iwlwifi-6000g2a-5.ucode"
I am new to Debian and am not sure how to install these files during the live install. The wiki pages list where these files are and can be downloaded. I did that and threw them on a thumb drive but the installer wouldn't access them. I'm sure I'm going about this totally wrong and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Thank you.

no problem,
https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/ ... 04.html.en

make sure deivice is supported on 3.16 kernel
https://wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi

There's a stretch rc2 installer here (read the whole page, good info near the bottom about firmware)
https://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
After using the Debian-Installer, please send us an installation report, even if there weren't any problems.

You can also get Debian ISOs that already have the firmware..a minimal web search should turn them up.

If you have recent hardware, Stretch might be a better choice overall, though with a little more effort, Jessie can also support newer hardware.

Thank you both for your help. I did find the iso with the firmware and managed to get it installed and all the hardware works. I haven't had time to set it up and configure yet, but it does work.
