Debian Jessie on Asus EEE PC (1000HE)

#1 Post by MerciadriLuca »

Hello,

I currently have Debian Squeeze running on my old Asus EEE PC (1000 HE). I should upgrade to Jessie, but I'm not sure that it won't bring me some bugs, as, AFAIR, it was already kinda tricky to install Debian Squeeze on it. Do you know if I can follow the standard dist-upgrade procedure to do so? Are there some folks here that already tried it (with success)?

For info:

Code: Select all

# cat /etc/apt/sources.list
gives

Code: Select all

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.5 _Squeeze_ - Official i386 NETINST Binary-1 20120512-20:43]/ squeeze main

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.5 _Squeeze_ - Official i386 NETINST Binary-1 20120512-20:43]/ squeeze main

deb http://ftp.belnet.be/debian/ squeeze main non-free contrib
deb-src http://ftp.belnet.be/debian/ squeeze main non-free contrib

deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib non-free

deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org squeeze main non-free

# squeeze-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://ftp.belnet.be/debian/ squeeze-updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.belnet.be/debian/ squeeze-updates main contrib non-free
and

Code: Select all

# uname -a
gives

Code: Select all

Linux merciadriluca-eee 2.6.32-5-686 #1 SMP Fri May 10 08:33:48 UTC 2013 i686 GNU/Linux
Note that I looked on https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEeePC but found no specific new information.

Thanks for any answer.

All the best,

i have an acer one from 2010 and it runs a rolling release distro with a custom i3 desktop.
with no problem whatsoever, i can even watch movies.
so technically i don't think jessie will be a problem, but maybe you shouldn't use its default desktop.

Thanks for your answer. Do you mean I could get some unreachable buttons etc, because of non-support of such a screen, if I install the stock version?

Wheezy to Jessie is not a trivial upgrade partly due to the introduction of systemd, and you are coming from one release before Wheezy. Perhaps a fresh install may be easier.
Make a disk image backup before you try it so you can restore it in case it doesn't work out.

I have installed debian jessie lxde om my Asus EEE (1000H) without any problems.
-2Gb memory
-replaced the wifi-card wit intel card long ago (better signal and better support in linux)
-replaced the hdd with ssd (huge performance improvement.

I also tried other distributions: peppermint, debian xfce, point linux (mate and xfce)
In my opinion most distributions with lxde or xfce will work fine with the Asus EEE.

I think you get the best results when you perform a clean install. Installing should be easy from usb. Th only problem you may have is the wifi. I use a wired conenction when I install. The after install I edit the sources.list (add contrib non-free) and update. Then it is possible to install the wifi drivers.

Stretch is not a problem either, if you want to upgrade later.
