At what point does the installation freeze?

After the progress bar for "Windows is loading files..." and when it says "Starting Windows." The animation where the four colored panes come together is just starting to appear.

This web page might help you to get Windows installed in UEFI mode, it was the first result of a google search for "windows 7 installation iso uefi" :D

Or this link from one of the posts

I just tried a Windows 7 64bit ISO in a VM that is UEFI enabled and got the same problem. This is a Windows issue and is probably beyond the scope of this forum. But I am still going to look for an answer. If there is one.

If you used Virtualbox it has issues with Windows UEFI (stated in virtualbox docs) so cannot be relied on for testing UEFI and Windows (all versions)

Wow! That's the answer? If it were me, I'd just download Windows 10 from MS and install that instead.

But you would need to purchase a license for that wouldn't you...

Dai: thanks for those links. The tutorial starts by booting from the DVD, so I'd need to do this with CSM enabled. Interesting...

Phenest: I'm inclined to agree with you. At this point, it seems that the better option (for me, anyway) is to remain in CSM and use the boot menu to get to Debian, and wait until I need to migrate to Windows 10.

Thanks to everyone for all the input on this. It was quite educational. I still want to learn more about GRUB and how it actually works, but that can wait.

No. But as this isn't a Windows forum, I won't discuss it here. If you're interested, PM me. Totally legit BTW.

As a side note: this only affects Windows 7.

I've successfully installed Windows 10 in UEFI mode in VirtualBox.

I too have a UEFI VM with Win 10, I was just saying what is in the VirtualBox Documentation.
