Debian Jessie + /dev/nvme... = Grub Error ?

#1 Post by vinz33 »

Hello,

Sorry, i don't speak english very well i am french... :( I come here in order to find help. In fact, i don't arrive to finish the debian installation on my new laptop. The problem is Grub and i need to keep it. It seems to come from the fact that /dev/sda is replaced by /dev/nvme... When the installation arrive to the grub installation part, it shows it cannot be done.

Is there someone who could give me some help please ?

Thanks you for your help :)

Cordially,

Vinz33

1. What version of Debian or you installing?
2. Are you installing via UEFI or MBR?
3. What is the EXACT error message?

I'm pretty sure that the stretch rc3 installer can handle NVMe devices:

Hello, thanks you for your answers. I am trying to install the debian Jessie 8.7.1-amd64 version. I have verified, it is not MBR but UEFI. I have disabled the security boot. Nevertheless, it doesn't work.

Stock kernel 3.16 (Debian Jessie) doesn't support NVMe block devices. You need to upgrade the kernel to 4.4. There is kernel 4.9 which is available in Jessie Backports which you can install instead through debootstrap method. Alternatively if you want something with an easy installer then Ubuntu 16.04 has kernel 4.4 LTS.
