Newbie - MacMini - Flashing Cursor - Debian 8 - Help

#1 Post by sdmactech »

New to Linux and Debian.

Attempted to install on a MacMini. Installed Debian 8 release downloaded to USB in Friday from Debian.org so I assume its the latest and greatest release.

MacMini is a Mid 2010-Late 2012 model without CD/DVD built in.

Installation looked like it was going fine on Friday when I left, just that it was taking a long time.

Returned this morning to a flashing cursor in the upper left hand corner that won't accept input.

Reboot flashes a Debian 8 splash screen, then some code (See below) then the cursor. Any help or direction would be appreciated. Again, Linux newbie, so I may need specific instructions.

code that flashes before disappearing and flashing cursor appears

Not concerned with the b43 - broadcom wireless as the machine is plugged in wired. Concerned with no GUI and only a flashing cursor with no input. Any help is greatly appreciated.

ctrl-alt-f1 resulted in login prompt

Was able to login but still stuck at command line, no graphical interface. I chose Gnome install option as well as cinnamon and mint so there should be some kind of GUI.

startx

Were you relying on the wi-fi for the Net connection?

What graphics hardware does that machine use?

I wish people would stop double posting, cross posting all over the board.
There seems to be a lot of this lately.
More people need to read the "Read Before your first post" guidelines.
Forum guidelines. Please read before first post!
Before you start using Debian User Forums, please observe the following guidelines:

1. Do not cross post. Posting the same topic in more than one category only creates confusion and makes it hard to keep track on the various replies. Double posts will be locked.

Good for you for finding that github that only has advice, no code.

But why do we need a github repo for advice that's already in the Debian wiki?

That's why I asked about the hardware--it's using AMD graphics, so it's the same old AMD-firmware-not-in-standard-Debian question that's so popular here.
