'Executing update-grub failed. This is a fatal error.'

#1 Post by edquin »

I'm having trouble installing Debian 8.8 jessie on a personal laptop. The laptop specifications are here, but to summarize the laptop has an i5-7200U, 8GB of RAM, a 1TB HDD (listed as HDD0 in the BIOS) and a 128GB SSD (HDD1 in the BIOS).

I am loading the Debian installation CD off of a USB (I used a free program called rufus to mount the iso to the USB) and I used this iso. In case anyone is wondering, the checksum of the iso file matches the checksum found online in the same place you download the iso. Also, I get the same error using a non-netinst iso as I do with this iso.

I formatted both the HDD and the SSD before trying to install debian, and I am trying to put debian on the SSD. When partitioning, I use the built in guided partitioning on the SSD, which produces the following setup:

Code: Select all

> 1MB FREE SPACE
> #1 536.9MB B F ESP
> #2 119.0GB F ext4 /
> #3 8.5GB F swap swap
> 335.4kB FREE SPACE
The HDD is mounted as sdb, the SSD is mounted as sdc, while sda belongs to the 1GB USB with the debian installation iso and sdd belongs to a 1GB with firmware needed by the laptop's wireless card. The HDD has a 1TB fat32 partition.

The CD image boots fine and I can get through the entire installation process without any problems until I get to the grub bootloader installation section. The installer gives me the error message: 'Unable to configure GRUB. Executing update-grub failed. This is a fatal error.' and my only option at this point is to finish the installation without a bootloader or abort the installation. I have tried the installation process over ten times, tweaking different settings in the BIOS and have tried installing onto the HDD, the SDD and a separate USB. All of them give the same error message. In the computer BIOS, secure boot is disabled, the boot mode is UEFI, and the boot order places the SSD first.I copied the portion of the syslog that documents when the grub error happens (scroll to the bottom):

Partition table entries are not in disk order.
At this point I can only conclude that either I'm missing something obvious within the BIOS (which I don't think I am because I have tried every setting that could possibly pertain to booting), or there is some type of hardware issue, which I don't think is the case since I get the same error on an external USB as I do on both of the laptop's hard drives. If anyone has any suggestions or thoughts, I would greatly appreciate them.

Thanks

Before you attempt to fix any "update-grub" issue, may I first suggest something else? i5-7200U is a spanking-new KabyLake processor on which you'll surely spend more time getting various things to work in Jessie. Switch to Stretch now and save time later. :D

Agree with previous post, and just wanted to add if you want to use the "Stable" version you only have to wait about a week before Stretch becomes "Stable".

I tried installing stretch a moment ago and I didn't get the grub error message, and I was able to boot into debian (only after setting the grub bootloader file as trusted in my bios, I don't know if that's normally required or not).

I also have a question regarding stable and testing releases. Will an everyday user be able to tell the difference between them? Does a testing release crash that much more often than a stable, or is stable more of a reassurance?

Despite the error, does Debian boot? And where did all the install log come from? Did you try something after installing? If so, what was the command you typed?

Debian does not boot, and the log is the syslog that I copied to a USB after I got the grub error message (pressing CTRL+ALT+F3 to get a console and then copying it over). I tried installing grub manually from rescue mode but I got error message upon error message, I probably was not doing it right.

What were the exact commands you typed in rescue mode to install Grub? You need to install grub to the EFI System Partition, and NOT the root of the drive (MBR).

At this point, I think I'll just wait for the stable release of Debian 9, since I was able to boot to it fine. Thank you all for your help you've been invaluable in the process.

You won't need to wait long, it is just a week or so any away.
In the meantime, here is some documentation you could read,...

Even the current stable version of Debian can become very "unstable"

I agree, with the previous posts, suggesting you use the newest version, or just wait a little while,

If you have successfully installed "stretch", and it boots, etc... you should be in good shape.
