Getting WiFi configurations setup

#1 Post by Robertg »

Hello everyone I have started using Debian on one of my machines and for the most part like the way it runs

What I don't understand is how come WiFi won't work right out of the box. I don't mind installing the necessary drivers if needed but I have not a clue were to look for them

I'm using a Wi-Fi dongle on one laptop and would like to install Debian on it but was afraid I will not be able to get the WiFi setup

Thanks for any help on this matter

Have you got Debian up and running on that laptop?

If you have got Debian up and running on that laptop, and you have indeed encountered some problem:
1. Describe the problem;
2. Plug in the Wi-Fi dongle and post the output of the following commands.

Code: Select all

uname -a
lsusb
lsusb -t

Getting WiFi configurations setup on Debian
==================
https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi
==================
https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse

There is plenty of documentation on this.
Not counting the 1000's of posts here on the forum , asking the same
question.
After you have at least tried the methods in the documentation,
if you still can not get it working, then post the details, exactly what
you really tried, and what error messages say, etc.

Any time you have an issue, your first stop should be the Debian Wiki. It contains answers to a wide variety of issues and problems. For instance...

https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi
https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse

Consulting the Wiki allows you to (a) solve many common problems based on the information therein and (b) may give you some important tips on information you'd need to provide in a forum post.

Ah, I see GarryR beat me to it. Oh well, no point wasting electrons, and all that.

Your welcome, and as I said, if you still have problems after reading
the documentation, and trying , feel free to give more details and someone
should be able to help.
I'm using a Wi-Fi dongle on one laptop and would like to install Debian on it but was afraid I will not be able to get the WiFi setup
You will see here: https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi
A list of devices , if it is in the list of supported devices, there shouldn't be
any problems,..if it isn't listed, it may be more difficult, or not possible.
We will need the info asked for by "orythem27"

also see: https://wiki.debian.org/HowToIdentifyADevice/USB

""a Wi-Fi dongle"" is not enough, we need to know what kind, etc.
