Boot problem after upgrade Jessie to Stretch
Boot problem after upgrade Jessie to Stretch
Hi all,
Yesterday evening, I upgraded from Jessie to Stretch.
I followed this below:
apt update
apt full-upgrade
sed -i 's|jessie|stretch|' /etc/apt/sources.list
apt update
apt install debian-archive-keyring
apt update
apt full-upgrade
Everything looked to be fine.
Then, a message asked me if I wanted to authorize automatic reboots, for which I said yes.
Few minutes after, an error message appeared (unfortunately I don't remember exactly what they said).
I had to restart my PC.
Now, the boot is stuck at the beginning, at the stage you can see in the attachment.
However, I can use the recovery mode.
I would like to avoid having to reinstall everything form scratch, even if I already saved most of my data.
Could you tell me what I could do please?
Is it possible to repair the issue with an installation CD or the recovery mode?
Thanks a lot!

Re: Boot problem after upgrade Jessie to Stretch
You might try editing your boot parameters to add:
nouveau.modeset=0
nouveau.modeset=0
DebianStable
Code: Select all
$ vrms
No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

Thanks for your answer.kedaha wrote:You might try editing your boot parameters to add:

I tried at the end of the line starting by "linux /boot/vmlinuz(...)", once separated by a space, anoter time by comma-delimited+space, both without success.
Did I do it wrong or it's just not the right solution for this problem?
Re: Boot problem after upgrade Jessie to Stretch
Open the file /usr/share/grub/default/grub as root, and add nomodeset to the line with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX to make:
Save the file and run update-grub as root.
EDIT: The file should be /etc/default/grub
Code: Select all
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset"
EDIT: The file should be /etc/default/grub

I will certainly sound stupid but can you tell me how to do this last part please?phenest wrote: and run update-grub as root.
Re: Boot problem after upgrade Jessie to Stretch
Open a terminal, login as root, and:
Code: Select all
update-grub

Re: Boot problem after upgrade Jessie to Stretch
Sorry, I thought I misinterpreted your message as this command was not found.
If someone read that and has this problem, solution here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/418666/ ... -not-found
So now, when I start my PC, I have the 2 first lines over the 3 I mentioned in my first post.
After a moment, they disappear and the screen remains black.

Re: Boot problem after upgrade Jessie to Stretch
Update :
I followed the instructions of this link below in case it could repare what is going wrong :
https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-upgrade- ... -9-stretch
Now, the problem is different.
Plenty of lines showing:
"(...) iwlwifi (...) EVT_LOGT: (...)
Then, on the last line:
"Error clearing ASSOC_MSK on BSS (-110)"
The screen is stuck at this stage.
EDIT: Rebooted again, problem came back as it was at the beginning

Re: Boot problem after upgrade Jessie to Stretch
Sorry to ask this, but why are you asking for help on this forum if you're going to follow advice from other websites instead?

Re: Boot problem after upgrade Jessie to Stretch
I don't mind when you find this advice, because it shows you're doing research. But if you follow it, it makes it more difficult for us to help as we're going to lose track of what you're doing.
Is this still relevant? If so, where did you get this output:

Re: Boot problem after upgrade Jessie to Stretch
It's not, now I have only this below:
/dev/sda5: clean, 248728/977280 files, 2522558/3932160 blocks
Do you think I could repair the system with an installation CD without loosing data and setups?

Hi all,
As I needed my PC quite urgently, I decided to reinstall it properly with an ISO on CD instead of waiting for the right answer.
Sorry for this and thanks a lot for those who tried to help.
