Debian 9 - cinnamon amd64 - non free

After booting 9.0.1 via a USB key i chose default then after a minute the cursor disappears and the screen goes black.

I have installed Linux mint with no problem
I have installed pclinuxos with no problem.

FYI

From Linux Mint -> Unetbootin -> black screen
From Windows 8 -> lili usb creator -> black screen
From windows 7 -->Rufus -> installs as expected finally

the best way to copy an iso to usb in linux is (in my opinion) the dd-command

One thing I noticed is that Rufus clearly states that it will also install syslinux to the live USB key. Unsure if the dd command does this also. I think this is wihy Rufus worked in my case.

You need syslinux in order to run live images. I also found Rufus to be the most reliable.

So the 9.0.1 amd64 non-free is not stable? I had to use a non-free just to install the thing. Perhaps I should learn to work with the stable? If I recall I had problem with WIFI installation. I do not mind learning.

That IS the Debian Stable. You need non-free firmware to use wi-fi. Some network cards are not supported and need to be built with non-free blob from source after install. One such card is mine, see this thread:

As you will see, it is a little bit tricky, but it can be done.
