KDM missing after installing stretch

#1 Post by wrmelgaard »

From Jessie to Stretch:
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt --fix-broken install
shutdown -r now
Upon reboot and login, I needed to "startx"
At that point, everything appears to be working properly.
Right-click on the screen to log out succeeds in logging out of Xwindow system, but not the user.
As far as I can tell, the KDM login manager is missing.

It looks like KDM is not in Stretch. It is in Sid. Maybe it will come to a backport. I would either switch to another DM or simply continue as you are with startx.

BTW, this is a great place to check which packages are available.

I thought KDM was replaced by SSDM? (Not QFT, merely parroting a report I heard.)

I expected a replacement for KDM but didn't know what because I don't use a DM of any kind. It turns out that the OP should be looking for SDDM. He might also look at kde-config-sddm.

going to
settings/system settings/login screen (SDDM)
there the only settable option that I find is color. And I don't see a noticeable change when I do change the color.
Apparently SDDM does NOT log out the user. All that it succeeds in doing is shutting down Xwindows. At that point, it is necessary to logout/login, startx.

That's good to know. I wonder why they didn't leave a virtual package for KDM for the transistion?
