apt-get dist-upgrade

apt-get upgrade wont install new stuff, just update existing stuff and a new version of firefox is 'new' ... so requires dist-upgrade ... which does cater for installing new/additional stuff.
Debian oldstable (Jessie) (MAIN repositories only), jwm, pcmanfm --desktop
Acer Aspire M3201 (2GB), AMD Phenom X4, Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT.

No offense but I'm not sure I'd recommend this. Packages are generally held for a reason and if OP isn't paying attention dist-upgrade could cause pretty significant breakage.

If OP is running Stable chances are there are some non-Debian repos enabled; if he's running Testing or Unstable he should probably wait until the held packages are made available.

Good point wizard10000. I run oldstable, main repositories only (no contrib nor nonfree) i.e. /etc/apt/sources.list content of ...

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ jessie main
deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main

For educational purposes only, what is the reason to track Jessie if you're running Stretch?
