Upgrade from 3.1 Sarge

#1 Post by jay007 »

Hello I have a device on the network the is running 3.1 Sarge. I need to upgrade this to Version 8 for security reasons. I believe I have to go from Sarge to Etch, Etch to Lenny etc..

I added

Code: Select all

deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian etch main contrib non-free
and

Code: Select all

deb http://security.debian.org etch/updates main contrib non-free
to my /etc/apt/sources.list: but I am getting timeouts

Code: Select all

Err http://archive.debian.org etch/updates/contrib Sources
Could not connect to 150.71.48.99:10080 (150.71.48.99), connection timed out
Err http://archive.debian.org etch/updates/contrib Release
Could not connect to 150.71.48.99:10080 (150.71.48.99), connection timed out
Failed to fetch http://archive.debian.org/debian/dists/etch/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz Could not connect to 150.71.48.99:10080 (150.71.48.99), connection timed out
Could anyone help me in trying to get the 3.1 upgraded.

I'd personally recommend a reinstall. And in the future keep it current as you go, not N number of years beyond outdated.

+1. Agreed. First, backup all sensitive information. If possible copy your entire /home directory to another drive.

Also don't forget to backup any databases you have in /var, and your /root folder (if you have any scripts you have created to run as root).

Also remember, that the upgrade to Debian 8 is a big one. Many things change because of the systemd.

So your options are: upgrade to debian 7,

Or reinstall, which is what I recommend. And while you are reinstalling, why not install the current stable version Debian 9.
Stretch has already been around for a while and starts to be quite stable.

This could be a good experiment if the OP wanted to upgrade to Stretch. Debian is really a great OS for someone to still get by using Sarge.

I'd be curious to see what happens.
