Re: trying to install chrome browawe on Debian Stretch
I just now selected the "Notify when Replies" option, and the box at the bottom,
in Options , is now checked, so it appears to be working.
Won't know for sure until some one replies here though.

Re: Trying to install chrome browser on Debian Stretch
elton-w, maybe the notification mails are in your spam folder?
Re: trying to install chrome browawe on Debian Stretch
Thank you so much!GarryRicketson wrote:When you start a topic, or are replying, look at the bottom of the post editor:Make sure the box is checked,Notify me when a reply is posted
if you want to be notified about replies.
If it is not checked, you will not receive a notification.
I do not use the automatic option, in the "user control" panel, I guess I could try it, to see. Probably you should have started a different topic, here:
http://forums.debian.net/viewforum.php?f=12
In order to avoid de-railing (interrupting) this topic. Also make sure your e-mail
address is correct, if that is not correct , obviously you would not receive notifications.
I'm not frequent in any forums, turning on notifications will not overwhelm me. So I got your response in my email today.
I've only logged in today to briefly check my email.

Re: Trying to install Chrome browser on Debian Stretch
So to get back on topic: I gather that the problem is a malformed line in the code. Couldn't this be fixed with a simple edit of the sources.list file? Rather than beat my head against a wall, perhaps I should give up and install Chromium. One would think that the maintainers of the repository should have fixed this by now.

Re: Trying to install Chrome browser on Debian Stretch
The normal way to install Chrome is to download the .deb from Google's download page and install it with dpkg -i or gdebi. The installation creates a file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list with the correct repo. We are all wondering how you managed to get the incorrect entry in the wrong sources file.

Re: Trying to install Chrome browser on Debian Stretch
You must still remove line #19 from your /etc/apt/sources.list file. It is incorrect and causing the error, as has been clearly stated several times already. You can use Synaptic if installed to manage your repositories from a GUI.
It is possible to disable a line by commenting it out, but since you are going to have a working line in another file, remove it altogether.

Re: Trying to install Chrome browser on Debian Stretch
What Steve said above ^, it's the reason for your apt-get error.
Fix that first (as I said, we're still wondering where that line came from).
dpkg will not install dependencies, so to use that you need to install dependencies first ie. libappindicator1
gdebi should install dependencies, God knows why it didn't work.

Re: Trying to install Chrome browser on Debian Stretch
Gdebi will install dependencies, so obviously whatever this "Debian software installer" really is, it's stupid if it's just using "dpkg -i". The lack of any terminal or other helpful error message makes me think it's some GNOME thing.
You can now also use apt on the command line to install local deb files and pull in dependencies; its advantage over gdebi is that you can use it to install multiple debs in one go that can depend on one another. Its disadvantage is a trickier syntax.

Re: Trying to install Chrome browser on Debian Stretch
It seems that GNOME software sets up as the default app for standalone debs, but it currently can't install them. Doesn't appear anyone is going to fix the bug in Debian: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... bug=851856
Ubuntu also shipped a bugged version of that with some recent releases, but they have more interest in fixing it.

The line has now been removed ans /etc/apt/sources.list now reads:
Code: Select all
#
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 9.1.0 _Stretch_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-1 201$
#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 9.1.0 _Stretch_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-1 2017$
deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security stretch/updates main contrib
deb-src http://security.debian.org/debian-security stretch/updates main contrib
# stretch-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
# A network mirror was not selected during install. The following entries
# are provided as examples, but you should amend them as appropriate
# for your mirror of choice.
#
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ stretch-updates main contrib
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ stretch main contrib non-free
# deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ stretch-updates main contrib
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ stretch-backports main contrib non-free
I don't know which package I need to install to resolve this.

Re: Trying to install Chrome browser on Debian Stretch
In the future, you can just install gdebi and use it on the command line, or its gdebi-gtk GUI, since it will automatically install missing dependencies if available, or refuse to install them if it's an incompatible package. Dpkg will happily half-install incompatible packages and then you'll have a semi-broken system--this has led to innumerable posts here.
