Sound configuration steps needed in a minimal Debian install

Postby manish.karnik » 2018-03-19 06:23

Greetings folks, my first post here.

I am installing a minimal Debian virtual machine in Virtualbox in a Lenovo laptop.
It has Openbox, fspanel and menu installed.
I am looking for steps to install and enable sound in this VM.

Thanks

Because there are different ways to setup sound, and because nobody knows exactly what your needs are, it's probably better if you decide which method you want to use, and then ask for help when you don't understand something?

There are several decent pages in the debian wiki. I'm not sure if there are issues to expect because of virtualbox. There are a lot of people on here who use vm though so I'm sure you can get more help if you run into trouble.

I always install pulseaudio, alsa-utils and pavucontrol.
I don't know about VB though, you might need to install something like virtualbox-guest-additions-iso,
it also depends if you are going to install WM or some DE, most DE comes with pulseaudio etc.

For sound configuration i always install alsa-utils, alsamixergui, libalsaplayer0. Then, in user dir, i make hidden file .asoundrc with this config
Code: Select all
pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card Intel
}

ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card Intel
}
