Resolution limited to 1024 x 768 on Gigabyte H370N MOBO

Postby cmartinKC » 2018-04-22 11:27

I have a new Gigabyte H370N Wifi MOBO. Using integrated graphics I can't get either Ubuntu 16 or Debian 8.1 to recognize my monitor. It shows up as "unknown" presenting a fixed resolution of 1024 x 768. My hunch is that I am missing a driver or kernel support. This MOBO uses the Intel H370 express chipset and mates with a 8th gen Core i3 Intel CPU. The onboard graphics is something I have not heard - listed in the manual as "Integrated Graphics Processor+MegaChips MCDP2800." It drives two HDMI ports ver 2 and 1.4 and a display port. Nice specs, if only it worked. Anybody know where I can score a compatible linux driver or if a fresh kernel that will rise to the occasion?

I'll take a WAG and say you're barking up the wrong tree. Try looking for some firmware.

Firmware, as in MOBO bios update? It ships with Bios from Feb. There is a March version with updated CPU microcode. I suppose they could have slipped some display code in there too. I got nothing to loose. Might as well flash it.

No - don't do that! Unless there is some bugfix or feature you want from new Mobo firmware.

I'm talking about looking in packages for firmware. Use your package management tool of choice and search for firmware.

Graphics and many other devices that require firmware don't show up as errors during install, but you can usually find them asking for firmware in dmesg output after first boot.

Well, with a bios dated this year I doubt jessie would be a good choice. Stretch+backports is probably what I'd try.

Firmware was available for the wifi adapter on the MoBo but not for the display adapter. A member of the ubuntu forum says the graphics on this MoBo is Intel UHD 630. The MCDP2800 is just a DisplayPort to HDMI bridge, and not something users really need to concern themselves with. I dumped last years Debian and loaded the April 15 Testing version of Debian. This worked right out of the gate with regards to solving my resolution and lack of two monitor support. Thanks for reading and posting everybody.

You should also install firmware-misc-nonfree and intel-microcode from the non-free section for full graphics and security support.

You should have been able to get it working with Debian 9, plus the kernel and firmware from stretch-backports, too. I plan to test that when I get my new laptop, which is still on order, with the Intel 630 GPU and 8th gen CPU, too.
The MX Linux repositories: Backports galore! If we don't have something, just ask and we'll try--we like challenges. New packages: GIMP 2.102, Pale Moon 27.9.2, Enlightenment 0.22, Calligra 3.1, VLC 3.0.2, Firefox 60.0.1, Krita 4.0.3
