XFCE hangs after upgrade Debian GNU/Linux 9

#1 Post by milosa »

Hello all,

Today I did "apt upgrade" and it installed/updated following packages (from /var/log/apt/history.log):
Start-Date: 2018-05-08 16:43:57
Commandline: apt upgrade
Requested-By: root (1)
Install: irqbalance:amd64 (1.1.0-2.3, automatic), linux-headers-4.9.0-6-amd64:amd64 (4.9.88-1, automatic), firmware-linux-free:amd64 (3.4, automatic), linux-image-4.9.0-6-amd64:amd64 (4.9.88-1, automatic), linux-headers-4.9.0-6-common:amd64 (4.9.88-1, automatic), libgstreamer-plugins-bad1.0-0:amd64 (1.10.4-1, automatic)
Upgrade: linux-image-amd64:amd64 (4.9+80+deb9u2, 4.9+80+deb9u4), linux-headers-amd64:amd64 (4.9+80+deb9u2, 4.9+80+deb9u4), libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37:amd64 (2.16.6-0+deb9u1, 2.18.6-1~deb9u1), gir1.2-webkit2-4.0:amd64 (2.16.6-0+deb9u1, 2.18.6-1~deb9u1), libjavascriptcoregtk-4.0-18:amd64 (2.16.6-0+deb9u1, 2.18.6-1~deb9u1), gir1.2-javascriptcoregtk-4.0:amd64 (2.16.6-0+deb9u1, 2.18.6-1~deb9u1)
End-Date: 2018-05-08 16:44:27
After restart the XFCE hangs after login.
I tried with root account (which I enabled) with the same result.
If I open a terminal CTRL+ALT+F2 and when I enter username and start entering password it suddenly switches back to my XFCE and drops me to my Desktop with no problems. Now, if I go to "Suspend" and back, I have no problems logging in.
I use Debian on my T420 laptop.

I was thinking to switch back to last know good packages, but I would first like to know if I can use upgrades without problems.

Edit: If I go to my old kernel (4.9+80+deb9u2) from Advanced GRUB menu, everything works just fine!

Any help is most welcome!

Thanks in advance!

Then it's the regression in the kernel. They have happened before and will happen again. Wait until it's updated and use the older kernel that works.

Just update again, because the fix for CVE-2018-1108 applied in DSA-4188-1 is temporarily reverted due to various regression, cf. #897599.

4.9.88+deb9u1 is the latest kernel, there is nothing to upgrade to!

Have you tried installing haveged to see if that fixes the issue?
