step `installing the system` fails on eeepc 1002HA

#1 Post by afylot »

I have an old (~8years) eeepc 1002HA, laptop with intel atom processor and 160GB HDD. I am trying to install debian 9.4.0, from a iso image that I flashed on a pendrive. The live version seems to work just fine, but the installation fails at `installing the system`. I do not intend to dual boot with any other OS. I have tried several ways to partition the disk (single partition, separate partition for /home, partition with LVM, without LVM), but the installation always fails. I was wondering if the problem could be related to the pendrive I have been using to install the OS (in fact, I see it listed among the primary partitions).

I would also be interested in installing a slightly older version of debian, but the error is not very informative, so it is difficult to understand what to do. I would be interested in any recommendation about how to trouble shoot the installation or installing previous version of debian.

I flashed on a pendrive.
How did you put it on a pendrive? Did you use an app? If so, which one?

How much RAM have you got?

from cat /proc/meminfo: MemTotal 1020604 kB

I have seen in /var/log/syslog that the installation fails at SQUASHFS error: xz decompression failed, data probably corrupt

I have tried passing ide=nodma acpi=off to the installer but it still doesn't work

Maybe it wasn't a good copy on the usb, or it could be some other things. What exactly happens that makes it fail? Maybe you can use the tty to get more info, described here. https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/ ... stall-base

Exactly which install image did you use? Atom N270 is a 32 bit processor.

i used to own a very similar asus acer one.
for all intents and purposes it was just a normal laptop.
however, many of these models had a memory card instead of a hard drive. what about yours?

the syslog error does sound like either the iso, or the stick, or the hard drive is corrupt.
maybe try fixing the filesystems from the live session?
