Installing Squeeze via netboot, no sources.lists

#1 Post by mirlipili »

Hello,

I'm trying to install Debian on an old NAS ( intel ss4000-e).
The install must be made via a serial cable, and the last functioning debian-installer is the squeeze version (wheezy is also available, but the installer doesn't start).

Now my problem is that I need to edit the sources.lists to change the mirrors to archive.debian.
I have access to a shell, but there is no 'apt' folder and no sources.lists I can find.

Where does the squeeze installer look for these infos?

Thanks

Try enter on http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ and to pay attention on "Old Releases".

The folder on an installed version is "/etc/apt", not "/apt".

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I'm not a native speaker, but there is no apt folder in /etc/.

I looked in all the folders, one way to get a bit further is to edit the file /etc/udebs-source from squeeze to wheezy, than it warns me that there might be a kernel problem, downloads a few file and then the installer stops ( or at least I have a blank screen).

Here is a 'ls' of /etc/:

Code: Select all

~ # ls
bin etc initrd media proc sbin tmp var
dev init lib mnt root sys usr
~ # ls etc/
SUPPORTED-short hosts mtab rcS.d
cdebconf.conf hotplug.d network resolv.conf
default-release inittab nsswitch.conf shortlists
fstab lsb-release passwd udebs-source
group modprobe.d preseed_aliases udev
hostname modules.conf profile
Another message I get before entering the shell is this:

Code: Select all

After this message, you will be running "ash", a Bourne-shell clone. x
   x x
x The root file system is a RAM disk. The hard disk file systems are x
x mounted on "/target". The editor available to you is nano. It's very x
x small and easy to figure out. To get an idea of what Unix utilities x
x are available to you, use the "help" command. x
   x x
x Use the "exit" command to return to the installation menu.
I thought it meant I would have a /target folder where I could maybe find /etc/apt, but there is nothing (not in /mnt or in /media either)

I should probably also post more info on how I'm trying to install Debian, I don't think it's the usual way.
I'm following this (https://www.debian.org/releases/wheezy/ ... t-firmware) tutorial to start the installer.

After some problems with the serial connection, I had problems because I was trying with the wheezy installer and the installer wouldn't start.

I found an old blog post that suggested using the squeeze installer ,which I did and then the install started.
I am stuck now because squeeze isn't in the normal repository anymore, and I don't know where I could tell the installer to look for another repository.

The installer I'm using is here: http://archive.debian.org/debian/dists/ ... t/ss4000e/

Is there maybe a way to edit the initrd.gz to change the (probably) hardcoded mirrors? Or to add my own?

Thanks

I extracted initrd.gz, and found the choose-mirror executable in the bin folder.
When I open it with kate, I can find the mirrors in plain text between the rest. Is it possible to modify it? Could I find the sources somewhere and recompile it? Or is this going to be too much trouble for an old Nas i bought for next to nothing?

I'm stupid, instead of choosing a country, the first option is to enter a repository manually. But as the installer automatically chooses a mirror in my country, I was at the end of the list, and didn't think to scroll trough all the options.
Now to install a RAID 10...
