Debian hangs after login
Debian hangs after login
Hi, I'm new to this forum. I downloaded the latest debian-9.5.0-cinnamon live iso for amd64. I used dd to burn the image into an USB pendrive. Then I started with the installation. Everything went fine, I installed debian into my whole hard drive(500GB). Then installation was finished and I rebooted. After booting, it showed various errors on radeon drivers...(or something...), bluetooth. Then I was given a login prompt. After loging in, there's an unresponsive black screen. Nothing happens...
I am really very new to linux, and I would appreciate if you guys bear up with me ...
Using the rescue mode gives me a command line shell. There startx gives a complete black screen. Net doesn't work.
Further I edited the /etc/apt/sources.list file to add contrib non-free.
Since net doesn't work, of course apt wouldn't.
So I used my special rescue pendrive containing puppy linux(from where I'm writing this post). Connected to net.
Then I chrooted into the hard disk.
But apt-get update doesn't work ... just hangs at 0%.
But I tried ping 8.8.8.8 and it seems net is working in chroot environment.
Please help, I kinda like debian and don't wanna leave it.

Re: Debian hangs after login
Does your computer have a MAKE and MODEL? Or can you tell us the basic specs?

Code: Select all
echo nameserver 8.8.8.8 > /etc/resolv.conf
apt update
EDIT: I have a similar laptop, make sure you install the non-free firmware.
EDIT2: Cinnamon will run slow on that piece of crap, I would recommend XFCE instead.

Re: Debian hangs after login
Ok... After writing /etc/resolv.conf I CAN use apt.
So I intalled all the non-free drivers by this:
It asked my permission and started. It said it will install firmware-linux-non-free too.
So everythig went fine.
Some website said I should also install llvm and clang for mesa to work. So I also installed them.
Then after reboot, it is still the same...
Any more suggestions?

What does the systemd journal say? Any relevant errors?Kaguro wrote:Then after reboot, it is still the same...
Can you log in to a console screen?
Does the "live" environment work on your machine?

I'm quitting.
I can't believe that such a mainstream linux distribution can suck so much!
I don't think I like the ideologies anymore....
I'm switching to Manjaro Linux.
Thank you very much to all those who tried to help me. I appreciate your help.

Re: Debian hangs after login
radeon always need the firmware-amd-graphics pkg. It's okay to quit, or distro hop awhile, just don't blame manjaro when you quit it too..Kaguro wrote: ...After booting, it showed various errors on radeon drivers...(or something...),

Heh, Heh,...
Then there were these blocks, or "pegs", it was a well designed toy, if you put the square peg in the square hole, it would fit, but not quite go all the way in, but if you gently tapped it with the hammer, it would go the rest of the way in, and after all the pegs , or blocks were put in, one would have what now was a pretty table /bench, with different colored squares, round disks, triangles, etc.
After showing off what I had done, I turned the "bench" upside down, and knocked out all of the blocks, and mixed them all up again.
The next kid, started trying to put them back in, like I had done, it was hilarious, I was laughing so hard, the kid could not reason, or use logic, and after struggling for a while, unable to get even 1 block to go into the wrong hole, he got mad, threw the bench across the room, and then attacked me
with the hammer, because I was laughing so hard,... I will never forget it,because it was also my very first fist fight in "kiddie school",... The kid said basically the same thing, "This toy sucks, and I quit, I hate this game",...
After I took the wooden hammer away, and started trying to "repair" his broken brain, the teacher got involved and separated us. Funny how , something someone says can trigger such a old memory,...
This reminds me of way back when I was still in kinder garden, had not even started the 1st grade in school. I enjoyed the "kindergarten" there were so many neat toys, etc , to explore. One of my favorites was this "work bench ", toy, it included a wooden hammer, and a table of sorts, with round holes, and square holes, triangular as well, there were even some star shaped holes.Kaguro wrote:I'm quitting.
