Huawei Matebook X Pro black screen at install

#1 Post by debforshort »

Hello,

I'm trying to install debian buster alpha3 on a Huawei Matebook X Pro with NVIDIA GeForce MX150.
I'm having the same problems as mentioned here:
https://superuser.com/questions/1334222 ... on-option
Specifically, I have disabled secure boot, can get to the grub install menu, but no combination of boot parameters that I change can bring up a working display after booting. I've also tried in text mode without success, but using audio synthesis can hear the installation instructions. I've also tried this for debian 9.5 (with firmware) in case it was an issue with testing.

I tried editing the boot parameters suggested here:
https://superuser.com/questions/1061488 ... p#1061927
but these parameters did not work.

Code: Select all

linux /install.amd/vmlinuz vga=788 nosplash --verbose text
linux /install.amd/vmlinuz vga=788 nosplash --verbose text intel_pstate=no_hwp
This solution blacklists some known module specific to a different laptop. I haven't found anything for the matebook x pro, however.

Any suggestions about what I should try next? Thank you in advance.

you need to search for solutions specific to this rather new hardware (it looks gorgeous btw, really small bezel around the screen):

...it looks like you will need to resort to ubuntu 18.04 LTS or something based on that.
or take the long and painful way with debian, why not.

Thank you for the reply. I suspected this would be the case. I'll try ubuntu and hopefully return to debian with a future release.

You could try editing the grub menu by adding nomodeset to the kernel line.
I couldn't work out if this uses dual graphics (Optimus) or the Nvidia chip is a dedicated full-time graphics. Optimus can be painful. Look in UEFI setup menu to see if you can disable one of the graphics cards while installing.
It is indeed a beautiful laptop and trust Huawei to "borrow" Macbook design and improve it. I think Apple will be borrowing ideas from this for their next year's model.

definitely worth a try.
if that works the fix might be easy.
