Debian version for VirtualBox

Postby az_dev » 2018-10-13 14:07

Hi, I am new to Debian and virtual machines and I am trying to download Debian ISO for virtual machine using VirtualBox.

When I go to the download links, which are quite few on Debian site, I get confused as to which version do I need. Do I need a designated Debian ISO for VirtualBox or any ISO will do?

Can anyone please suggest which link do I need for amd64 machine using VirtualBox?

I am mainly will be using for java programming using jdk, node.js etc.

Thank you

Any iso will do it. Take that one for example [1]

Thanks for your reply. I've downloaded and it's only 300mb. I presume it's an Internet version. Will it work on VirtualBox?

It all depends on how you have Virtual Box configured. Yes it will work if you set up the VM correctly.

Be aware that you'll have to install kernel headers and compilers in the Debian guest, then compile the guest modules there, in order to get shared folders, resizable desktops, and other goodies. You can install virtualbox-guest-dkms from the contrib repository to achieve the build.
The MX Linux repositories: Backports galore! If we don't have something, just ask and we'll try--we like challenges. New packages: Quod Libet 4.2.0, Pale Moon 28.2.0, wine-staging 3.20, GIMP 2.10.8, Liquorix kernel 4.18-22, Midori 6.0

Or use QEMU & KVM, Debian already has the drivers for that, no need to compile anything.

This is even possible if the host uses an inferior operating system:

why don't you just tell us what you want:
live or install?
GUI or not?
which desktop environment?
etc.
then we can point you to the right .iso.
