Debian on Intel NUC8i7BEH - 2 Issues

#1 Post by newb2debian »

When I was installing Debian 9.6.0, the Cinnamon desktop, on my Intel NUC8i7BEH, the install queried me for the Ethernet driver. The NUC8i7BEH has an Intel I219-V Ethernet controller which uses the e1000e driver. The only reason I know this is because I installed another Linux OS to find out what was being used. During the Debian install, I chose the e1000e driver and it wouldn't progress; as if the install didn't even see the Ethernet controller. I ended up having to continue the install without configuring Ethernet. After the installation completed and I logged in, a video error displayed. The error stated it was running in software rendering mode and currently running without video hardware acceleration and, as a result, you may observe much higher than normal CPU usage. I was looking for a much smoother install not unlike my other Debian installs. I realize I'm using a different Linux OS at present, but, I would much rather use Debian if I can. Anyone have any issues installing Debian on an Intel NUC8i7BEH? Maybe someone could notify the developers of these issues? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

personally, I'm surprised you got so far using a Debian Stable Image with such a new computer.
[[[ also - nuc's have come a long way in a few years.
Intel nuk's used to be in a special Debian category call embedded architecture, like raspberrypi on arm* architecture.
Intel nuk's now have the appearance of miniATX systems
sort of like the mac mini's released in yeas past.
see also: µATX, uATX[1] or mATX
just so you get an idea of what you have. ]]]

All that aside, if you post your dmesg to a paste bin
ie https://paste.debian.net/
we can see "collectively" what some of the issues are.

thanks for you interest.

These issues with new hardware on an aging release are common, and are usually addressed by installing upgraded kernels, mesa, firmware, etc. from Debian backports. The Debian devs don't need to be informed of this; the procedure is well-established, and the subject of many many many threads here.

Can we see what hardware you really have in there?

If you have a Net connection, install inxi, then update your hardware ID database with (as root or with sudo)

Code: Select all

update-pciids
update-usbids
Edit: fixed typo in update-pciids.

Then as a standard user, give us the results of

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

stevepusser...the distro I'm currently using already has inxi as a part of the installation. When I entered update-pcids, the following was returned - sudo: update-pcids: command not found. However, update-usbids worked. The below is what was returned when I ran - inxi -Fxz:

Whoops, I made a typo--should be "update-pciids". I fixed it in my OP.

Anyway, you have Intel 2018 eighth-generation Coffee Lake hardware, which really does need those updates from stretch-backports to work correctly.

If you're waiting for a Debian where everything will just work out of the box, you'll have to wait for Buster, which will be a while. I help develop the Stretch-based MX Linux, a Debian derivative, and we added those backports to our newly-released MX 18, though--that was something I really pushed for, successfully. https://archive.org/details/MX18X64

Dear Friends,

any update in installing debian 9 on the NUC8i7BEH ? I have no native network connection - neither wifi nor ethernet. would need at least the ethernet going... I did the installation via a borrowed usbc-ethernet adapter, but now would need it on the internal card.

00:1f.6 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Device 15be (rev 30)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Device 2074
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 255
Memory at c0b00000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128K]
Capabilities: [c8] Power Management version 3
Capabilities: [d0] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+

00:14.3 Network controller: Intel Corporation Device 9df0 (rev 30)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Device 0034
Flags: fast devsel, IRQ 255
Memory at 404ac10000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [disabled] [size=16K]
Capabilities: [c8] Power Management version 3
Capabilities: [d0] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
Capabilities: [40] Express Root Complex Integrated Endpoint, MSI 00
Capabilities: [80] MSI-X: Enable- Count=16 Masked-
Capabilities: [100] #00
Capabilities: [14c] Latency Tolerance Reporting
Capabilities: [164] Vendor Specific Information: ID=0010 Rev=0 Len=014 <?>

by the way - I have had ubuntu running which worked on networking (but ubuntu is not good enough for me - so need to go with Debian)

regards, DkSill

Thank you for your answer - I am looking into the MX page...

I wonder, however, whether there is a driver, meanwhile, for the actual Debian Stretch. Since my computer is a server it should be stable and last long time, with the possibility to apt install / update etc... just Debian...

best greetings, dksill
