Re: install debian 9.7.0 not booting

#23 Post by richjoh »

Any suggestion please let me know...

I have a gut feeling its the Secure Boot issue mentioned at the beginning of the post. My BIOS uses UEFI in remote PXE boot only, if I set that to Off, I think that secure boot still persist during Legacy boot preventing BIOS from launching Grub. I toggled the passwords to disable Secure Boot once and the BIOS got into a mode where I couldn't revert back to no passwords. The BOIS recovered after the battery drain and a shut down, after which the default BIOS settings where back.

I'm not even looking at that output until you enclose it in code tags.

Secure Boot is a UEFI feature so enabling Legacy mode should disable it, I think.

The Debian buster RC1 installer supports Secure Boot.

The report contains no evidence of EFI boot setup : no EFI system partition, Windows is set up for BIOS/legacy boot, the Debian installer was launched from BIOS/legacy boot... So I strongly doubt that UEFI or secure boot is the issue.

The report also does not show a GRUB boot sector in any MBR, confirming the result of the previous hd command, nor in any partition boot record. So no wonder why GRUB does not load.

What device exactly did you select when installing the GRUB boot loader ? Did you select the whole disk sdb or a partition ? Did you select in a list or type the device pathname ?

As a workaround you could install GRUB from the live system.

Code: Select all

mkdir -p /boot
mount /dev/sdb1 /boot
apt-get install grub-pc-bin grub2-common
grub-install /dev/sdb

Hi Richjon,

p.H is correct. The very first part of your Boot Info Script details you have Windows in the MBR of your first HD and nothing in the MBR's of the other two HD, so as p.H states "no wonder why GRUB does not load".

The only way for GRUB to load in your current configuration is for you to add the location of GRUB as a boot entry to the Windows code (what I call the Windows Bootloader) in the MBR of your first HD. A great tool I use to do this is EasyBCD which is no cost if for personal use.

The main point here is, apparently you chose not to have GRUB written to the MBR of your first HD, where most BIOS looks for it. The MBR of your first HD is not empty however since you had Windows already on the HD and it's install put the Windows Bootloader there, from which you can boot Windows...but not Linux since there is no boot line/option for Linux in the Windows boot loader menu list. As I mention above, you can correct this with EasyBCD.

It's really a question (on a dual boot box like yours) of which bootloader do you want to use: Windows or GRUB? If you want to keep the Windows bootloader like your system is now, you must add an entry to the Windows boot menu for Linux and point it to whereever you installed GRUB. If you want to make your life WAY easier just use GRUB as your bootloader by answering yes to the install question "Do you want to install GRUB to the MBR of your hard drive?" and then choosing the HD's MBR you want the installer to install GRUB onto (remembering that every HD has an MBR...AND that most BIOS look for the bootloader in the MBR of the first HD on your system, i.e. sda) During install Grub will automatically find your Windows install (and any other main stream OSes installed) and make an boot menu entry for it so when GRUB starts you can choose what OS to start.

Thanks
Jeffrey Bruton

I warn against installing GRUB to the Windows drive because it makes each drive depend on each other for booting (a part of GRUB is still installed in /boot on the Debian drive). Most BIOS allow to set the boot order among several drives. For those which don't, consider swapping the drive connections.

Sorry for the long delay, so if I read the response correctly the problem is GRUB failed to install, although I observed no errors during GRUB installation at the end of Debian install procedure.

I selected the whole disk sdb, unpartitioned. I didn't use a device path. During the install it appears to create GRUB boot loader since I never see errors reported. My whole idea was to not write a boot loader to sda since it would overwrite that Win MBR. I wanted to make disc, so that either disk can be used if the other is missing. I had a setup like this years ago playing around with Fedora, still a novice.
The Debian buster RC1 installer supports Secure Boot.
So the latest Debian "buster RC1" fixes this problem. I bricked my boot flash drive several times now, as soon as I recover a flash drive, I'll try buster RC1 and report back.

This was not effective, as sdb's MBR does not contain GRUB's boot image. Maybe you selected the wrong drive ?

No. Secure boot is a UEFI thing but you have a BIOS/legacy setup.

I extracted debian-10.2.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso to a USB drive installed Debian to my second HD, 128Gigs. The problem with Debian not booting up persist. During the install Grub was written to the drive and not to the First HD which (Windows OS) is installed.

I'm not sure what to do here, maybe start a new thread?

Everything that has been mentioned so far in this thread persist. Not a UEFI boot up, its Legacy Boot up. I write Grub to the drive that does not have Windows OS. At boot up, from BIOS, I select the Debian drive to boot from and all I get is the blinking underscore prompts. Nothing else happens.

So I was able to solve this issue by removing the HD with the Windows OS, then install Debian on the second HD. When first booting up, I entered into BIOS and select the drive new installed Debian HD. I successfully booted up Debian then I shut down.

I put the Windows OS HD back in my labptop then booted to either disk using the F7 key (shows boot menu).

I don't know if Grub just fails to write the the chosen HD during the install or a hardware feature prevents installing Grub on the HD when an OS (MS Windows) exist.

I cannot get my BIOS menu to display 2 or more boot drives. The menus settings only show 1 disk with the other disk option showing (BBS Boot is disabled) <--I think that's the wording off the top of my head. This BIOS on my laptop is circa 2011-2013 where most hardware was just transitioning to UEFI.

"Extracted" ? There is no need to extract anything from a Debian ISO hybrid installation image to prepare an installation USB drive. Just write the raw image to the raw USB drive with dd or cp.

Did you check that GRUB was actually present in the MBR of the drive with bootinfoscript or simply with the following command ?

Code: Select all

hd -n 512 /dev/sdX

Unlikely.

Any ideas on to why removing the 1st HD I was able to boot the Debian HD after the installation of Debian?

OK, I use the wrong terminology you don't like extracted... write the image to a usb, not that important.

No I did not check that GRUB was actually written. In this thread I posted the boot disk information, I recall someone responding that GRUB was never in the text information. Therefore to me, Grub was never written to the 2nd HD which prevented boot up of Debian. Removing the 1st HD then installing I can boot up.
