Help with issues regarding installation of Debian

"does not have a Release file"

Postby bobcat » 2019-11-14 04:20

I tried to change "Source code" for Debian Software using the "Software & Updates" GUI but the process got stuck for hours when "Refreshing software cache", so I had to reset the system. Unfortunately, after doing so, something has gone wrong... I was not able to update my system anymore:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
Hit:1 http://cran-r.c3sl.ufpr.br/bin/linux/debian buster-cran35/ InRelease
Ign:2 http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb stable InRelease

N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.

I got the above error message. Could someone help me to solve the problem? I am using Debian 10.1.

Hi there
The error:
Code: Select all
    Err:12 http://deb.debian.org/debian buster/updates Release
      404  Not Found [IP: 2a04:4e42:2a::204 80]
    Reading package lists... Done
E: The repository 'http://deb.debian.org/debian buster/updates Release' does not have a Release file.
N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.

It should be: deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster-updates main
Code: Select all
# buster-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster-updates main
#deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster-updates main

So check it's the same.
If there's any problem, then please post your full sources list. Open a terminal and cut and paste the output of:
Code: Select all
$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list

Hi kedaha!

This is the full sources list:
Code: Select all
#

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 10.1.0 _Buster_ - Official amd64 NETINST 20190908-01:07]/ buster main

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 10.1.0 _Buster_ - Official amd64 NETINST 20190908-01:07]/ buster main

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster main
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster main

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster/updates main
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster/updates main

# buster-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster-updates main
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster-updates main

# This system was installed using small removable media
# (e.g. netinst, live or single CD). The matching "deb cdrom"
# entries were disabled at the end of the installation process.
# For information about how to configure apt package sources,
# see the sources.list(5) manual.

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster contrib non-free

deb http://cran-r.c3sl.ufpr.br/bin/linux/debian buster-cran35/

Thanks!

Thanks. I was interested to see you have selected a CRAN Mirror, which I hadn't come across before.
I'd just comment on a couple of things:
All the deb-src lines are for source packages, which are only needed to compile some package or examine the source code for bugs. They can be commented out, i.e., disabled, by using a hashtag # to look like this:
Code: Select all
#deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster main

And refreshing the repositories will be faster.
I see that you have this line:
Code: Select all
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster contrib non-free

It is more usual to include contrib and non-free, if needed, in one-line style format after main like this:
Code: Select all
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian buster main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org buster/updates main contrib non-free

But there's also this line:
Code: Select all
deb http://cran-r.c3sl.ufpr.br/bin/linux/debian buster-cran35/

No idea what that might contain

Hi kedaha!

But there's also this line:
CODE: SELECT ALL
deb http://cran-r.c3sl.ufpr.br/bin/linux/debian buster-cran35/

No idea what that might contain

It is the repository for the R project for statistical computing, https://www.r-project.org/

I fixed the issue using TimeShift App. restoring to a snapshot that was taken previously to the incident.

I have made some improvement to /etc/apt/sources.list according to your suggestions.
Thanks!
