Help with issues regarding installation of Debian

tasksel: apt-get failed (100) --> Pckg xorg no inst [SOLVED]

Postby akrueger » 2019-12-12 02:23

After dist-upgrading to Debian 10 buster, all works relatively well, but I have some remaining glitches. Please help me fix them. Thanks!

First symptom:

Code: Select all
sudo tasksel install cinnamon-desktop

tasksel: apt-get failed (100)

I could already identify the probable cause:

Code: Select all
sudo apt install task-cinnamon-desktop
...
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
task-cinnamon-desktop : Depends: task-desktop but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

then I get a "Depends: xorg but it is not installable":

Code: Select all
sudo apt install task-desktop
...
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are
using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
task-desktop : Depends: xorg but it is not installable
Recommends: task-gnome-desktop but it is not going to be installed or
task-xfce-desktop but it is not going to be installed or
task-kde-desktop but it is not going to be installed or
task-lxde-desktop but it is not going to be installed or
task-cinnamon-desktop but it is not going to be installed or
task-mate-desktop but it is not going to be installed or
task-lxqt-desktop but it is not going to be installed

Now I find this rather weird:

Code: Select all
sudo apt install xorg

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package xorg is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'xorg' has no installation candidate

weird BECAUSE there is a package 'xorg' available:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-cache show xorg

Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.7+19
Installed-Size: 52
Maintainer: Debian X Strike Force <debian-x@lists.debian.org>

and one which is called xserver-xorg:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-cache show xserver-xorg

Package: xserver-xorg

Ah, I think I found something:

Code: Select all
 apt-cache policy
...
Pinned packages:
     xinit -> 1.4.0-1 with priority -30000
     xorg -> 1:7.7+19 with priority -30000

Now this worked, suddenly:

Code: Select all
sudo rm /etc/apt/preferences.d/apt-listbugs
sudo apt install xorg

hopefully that xorg had not been pinned for a good reason lol.

tasksel: apt-get failed --> Pckg 'xorg' no instcandid [SOLVE

Postby akrueger » 2019-12-12 03:23

Yes, SOLVED. The apt-listbug pinning was the cause of my problems.

Now almost 200 packages later ... all is good.

Code: Select all
sudo apt list --installed xorg*
Listing... Done
xorg-docs-core/stable,stable,now 1:1.7.1-1.1 all [installed,automatic]
xorg-sgml-doctools/stable,stable,now 1:1.11-1 all [installed,automatic]
xorg/stable,now 1:7.7+19 amd64 [installed]

sudo apt list --installed task-*
Listing... Done
task-british-desktop/stable,stable,now 3.53 all [installed]
task-cinnamon-desktop/stable,stable,now 3.53 all [installed]
task-desktop/stable,stable,now 3.53 all [installed]
task-english/stable,stable,now 3.53 all [installed]
task-gnome-desktop/stable,stable,now 3.53 all [installed,automatic]
task-laptop/stable,stable,now 3.53 all [installed]
task-print-server/stable,stable,now 3.53 all [installed]
task-ssh-server/stable,stable,now 3.53 all [installed]

Thanks, and sorry for bothering you...
