[SOLVED] AMD Ryzen 3200G can't start Nvidia Driver

Postby Crowbar » 2020-01-19 21:28

Hi

I've installed a new mobo and connected my existing debian hard drives into the new mobo.

The PC starts and I have to run "Startx" for it to go into graphical mode.

Code: Select all
# lspci -nn | egrep -i "3d|display|vga"
07:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Picasso [1002:15d8] (rev c9)

Code: Select all
# inxi -Gxx
Graphics:
Device-1: AMD Picasso vendor: ASUSTeK driver: N/A
bus ID: 07:00.0 chip ID: 1002:15d8
  Display: server: X.org 1.20.4 driver: ati,vesa
  unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,radeon compositor: kwin_x11
  tty: 67x18
Message: Advanced graphics data unavailable in console for
  root.

I've updated the sources.list with backports and run

Code: Select all
# apt-get -t buster-backports install firmware-amd-graphics

Code: Select all
# nvidia-detect
No NVIDIA GPU detected.

I've installed

Code: Select all
# apt-get install firmware-linux-nonfree libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-video-ati

and

Code: Select all
apt install nvidia-driver

My xorg.log file is:

Code: Select all

You said
I've installed a new mobo and connected my existing debian hard drives into the new mobo.

but you don't mention connecting a video card. So maybe you didn't connect a video card? That could explain why the lspci and inxi commands don't report an nvidia video card.

Yes, so much copied and pasted text, but that very important information...no. :(

If the Nvidia card is installed, perhaps you can disable the integrated AMD one in the machine's UEFI setup to get it to show.

Hi Guys.

I may have made a big boo boo here. I was sold a mobo and ram and chip on the basis it had a graphics chip.

Here are my parts:

ASUS Prime A320M-E
AMD Ryzen 3 3200G with Radeon Vega 8 graphics. 4ghz
8GB ram.

It's an integrated Graphics chip isn't it? So, nothing to set up apart from drivers? Is there something in the BIOS I need to do?

3rd generation Ryzen is not supported by the stock Debian buster kernel.

If you enclose your "wall of output" in code tags then I might actually look at it.

Sorry. Changed to code. It does look better. Unfamiliarity.

Thanks!

You're running the vesa driver so you need to try a newer kernel, see my [FAQ] in the Tips section.

Fantastic.

Code: Select all
# apt install -t buster-backports linux-image-amd64

Was all I had to do, restart and then configure through System Settings.

Cheers.

Actually.

How do I confirm it's using the Nvidia driver?

Code: Select all
# nvidia-detect
No NVIDIA GPU detected.

Should that say something else?

The output is perfectly correct. You don't have any Nvidia graphics--you have AMD integrated graphics that is part of the processor chipset. You can add a discrete AMD or Nvidia card to your moboard if you want more performance, such as for gaming.
The MX Linux repositories: Backports galore! If we don't have something, just ask and we'll try--we like challenges. New packages: Kodi 18.5, Blender 2.8.2, 5.5 kernels, Openshot 2.5.0, Telegram-desktop 1.9.14, LibreOffice 6.4.1~rc1
